In breve

Pre-book a driver for the airport run to Canggu, because the short drive can take an hour or much more in traffic. Once there, use ride-hailing and walking for short hops, a driver for day trips, and a scooter only if you hold a motorbike license and insurance that covers you. Avoid the late-afternoon and weekend peaks.

Ngurah Rai Airport is not far from Canggu on the map, yet the transfer can take well over an hour, and that gap is the whole story of getting around here. A pre-booked driver is the easiest start; the rest of the trip depends on how you move once you are in the Canggu travel guide area, where traffic, narrow lanes and scooters shape every plan.

For entry and money before you land, see the Indonesia guide.

How do you get from Bali airport to Canggu?

There are four realistic ways: a private driver you book in advance, a ride-hailing car, a metered or fixed-fare taxi, and a shared shuttle. All of them use the same road network, so the difference is not speed but stress, price and what happens when something goes wrong.

The route heads north from the airport through the Kuta and Seminyak corridor, then west toward the coast. In light traffic, such as late evening or early morning, expect it to be quicker. Late afternoon, weekends and wet-season downpours can stretch it considerably, and the UK government warns that heavy rain can cause localized flooding and major traffic congestion in Bali. Plan for the slower case if you have to check in somewhere by a fixed time.

Immigration and baggage reclaim add their own delay before you even reach the curb. The queue at passport control can be long when several long-haul flights land together, so do not book a driver for the minute your plane touches down. Give yourself a buffer of 45 to 90 minutes after landing, and ask your driver to track your flight number. If you have not yet sorted your entry, read the Bali tourist levy and e-VoA guide before you fly, so that entry steps do not add a delay at the airport. Also note that the UK government says Ngurah Rai is closed for the whole day of Nyepi, Balinese New Year, which falls in March, so do not plan an arrival or departure for that date.

Which airport transfer should you pick?

Choose by how tired you will be and how much you value certainty. A pre-booked private car costs more than a taxi in some cases and less in others, but it removes the negotiation at the curb. Ride-hailing is often cheaper when it works, but app pickups at the airport and in some neighborhoods can be limited, so you may be asked to walk to a designated area. The UK government advises checking that the driver matches the person on the app and sharing your journey with a friend. Taxis are easy to find but vary in price, so agree the fare or insist on the meter before you get in.

For a first visit, a pre-booked car is the best choice. You pay for a known price and a person who will wait for you. If you are staying in a villa deep in the rice fields, a driver who has the address and your host's number will also save you from a long search down a dark lane. You can ask the host or a hotel in Canggu to arrange it; many do so for a fee.

For your return, add a margin. Traffic into the airport is heavy, and you should leave Canggu at least three hours before an international departure, more if you hit a Friday or Sunday peak. Check the airline's check-in cutoffs, and do not plan a morning surf session before a midday flight.

How do you get around Canggu?

Short hops inside the Batu Bolong core can be done on foot, but most of Canggu is spread across narrow roads with patchy or missing sidewalks. In practice you will use one of three options: ride-hailing, a driver by the hour or day, or a scooter you ride yourself.

Ride-hailing with Grab or Gojek covers most trips and is often cheaper than hiring a car. Drivers can be slow to find you in peak traffic or in narrow lanes, and some pickup spots can be limited, so you may need to walk a few minutes to a corner. Send a pin, confirm the pickup, and keep your phone charged. An eSIM for Indonesia makes this much easier than hunting for Wi-Fi.

A driver by the hour or day is the better choice for longer outings, such as Tanah Lot, Ubud or the Bukit Peninsula. It costs more than an app, but you avoid parking and your driver can set the route around traffic. Fix the price, the hours and what happens if you run late before you start.

Should you rent a scooter in Canggu?

A scooter gives freedom, but it is also a common way for visitors to get hurt on Bali. The UK government reports very poor traffic discipline and a large increase in moped and motorbike accidents in Bali, some fatal, and advises wearing a helmet in good condition. Roads are busy, surfaces are uneven, lanes are narrow, and rain makes it worse. The same advice says a UK driving license is not enough and that an International Driving Permit is needed, and it tells you to make sure you hold the right license for the vehicle and that your insurer covers you. A rental shop's casual approach does not protect you.

Before you rent, check three things. First, do you hold a valid license that allows you to ride a motorbike here? If not, skip the scooter. Second, does your travel insurance cover scooter riding, and are there exclusions for unlicensed riders or for riding without a helmet? Third, are you comfortable riding in dense, unpredictable traffic with no margin for error?

If any of those answers is no, use ride-hailing and a driver for day trips. The cost is higher per trip but far lower than a medical bill, and you will not have to worry about parking or fines.

When is Canggu traffic worst?

Traffic follows a pattern. Mornings tend to be quieter. Midday builds as day-trippers and delivery vehicles arrive. Late afternoon to evening, when people head out for sunset and dinner, is the slowest, especially on weekends and holidays. Rain makes everything worse, since flooded lanes and slick roads slow every vehicle.

Plan your day around that. Do your beach and surf in the morning, take the rice-field or temple outing at midday and be at your dinner spot early or late rather than at 6pm. If you want a sunset drink at Echo Beach, arrive well before the sun sets or walk the last stretch, because cars and scooters back up on the approach road.

The sunset window also shapes your base. A pocket you can walk to a few places from, such as Batu Bolong, takes far less stress out of the evening than one that needs a ride each time. The comparison in the Canggu vs Seminyak vs Ubud guide shows how this differs from other parts of Bali.

Day trips from Canggu

Most day trips start with a driver. Tanah Lot, a sea temple on a rock, is a short drive up the coast and is best away from the sunset rush. Ubud is inland and a longer drive, an easy day with a driver. The Bukit Peninsula, with Uluwatu's cliffs and temple, is in the other direction and also takes time.

Keep your plans modest. Two stops is plenty in a day when traffic can add a long delay in each direction, and returning at sunset adds to it. If you only have a few days, choose one direction and one theme: temples and rice terraces to the north, or cliffs and surf to the south. The Ubud guide and the Bukit Peninsula guide cover both.

Keep your bag in front of you on busy streets and at beach parking. The UK government notes that bag-snatching is often reported in Bali, so carry only what you need, conceal your bag and keep your phone away from the roadside when you ride or walk beside traffic.

Finally, check the weather and the day's plans before you commit to a driver. Rain, ceremonies and road closures can change travel times in a way that apps will not show. If something changes, tell your driver early, and keep a flexible attitude. Bali's roads reward patience more than any shortcut.

Domande frequenti

How far is Canggu from Bali airport?

It looks close on the map, but the drive can take an hour or more depending on the time of day and which pocket of Canggu you are going to. Late evening and early morning tend to be quicker, and late afternoon is usually the slowest.

What is the best way to get from Bali airport to Canggu?

A pre-booked private driver is the least stressful, especially after a long flight. Ride-hailing can work, but app pickups at the airport can differ from the taxi counters, so check where to meet your driver. Taxis are often the most expensive option, so agree the fare first.

Do I need a scooter in Canggu?

No. Ride-hailing, a driver for the day and walking in the core cover most trips. A scooter gives freedom but needs the right license, a helmet and insurance that covers you, and the roads are busy and uneven.

Do Grab and Gojek work in Canggu?

Both apps are widely used, but pickups can be limited at some spots, so you may be asked to walk to a nearby corner. Check that the driver matches the app, share your pin and expect longer waits at peak times.

What is the worst time for Canggu traffic?

Late afternoon into the evening, around sunset, and on weekends, when day-trippers arrive. Plan transfers and cross-town trips for mid-morning or after dark when you can.

Can you walk around Canggu?

In the Batu Bolong core, yes. Elsewhere, sidewalks are patchy or missing and traffic is heavy, so most visitors ride for dinner and beach trips. Pick your base with walking in mind if you do not want to ride.

  1. Fact-checked against official sources; checked the UK government travel advice for Indonesia (licensing, helmets and moped accidents in Bali, app taxis, bag-snatching, Nyepi airport closure, flooding); removed the unsourced 20 km distance, door-to-door drive times, day-trip minutes, the tide claim and the airport app-pickup rules, and kept the driving and insurance guidance to what the advice states.
  2. First published. Drive times are estimates and depend on traffic; no fares are quoted, so check current prices with your driver, app or hotel.
