Stay in Tapovan or near Laxman Jhula for a first trip: it has the cafes, yoga drop-ins and easy walks to the river. Choose the Ram Jhula and Swarg Ashram side for ghats and aarti, Muni Ki Reti for buses and early departures, and a Shivpuri camp for rafting and quiet nights. Book ahead for festival weeks and the cooler months, and ask your property how guests cross the river today.

How to choose
Rishikesh is a long, thin town stretched along the Ganga, and the part of it you sleep in decides how much you walk, how loud your nights are and how easily you reach the rafting launch points. The Rishikesh travel guide covers the sights and the seasons, and this page settles where to sleep. For the wider picture of the trip, see the India guide.
Uttarakhand Tourism calls Rishikesh the yoga capital of the world and notes that its ashrams, some internationally known, run courses in yoga and meditation. It also lists the main areas visitors use: the Triveni Ghat in the heart of town, the cluster of ashrams called Swargashram on the eastern bank, and the footbridges of Lakshman Jhula and Ram Jhula, which it describes as a 3 km walk apart. Those are the reference points for the four bases below.
Three questions narrow the choice. Do you want cafes and yoga classes at your door, or ghats and the evening aarti? Do you need an early start for a train or a flight? And is the river itself, with rafting, the main reason you came? The answers point to different corners of the map.
Price bands are relative: $ for budget, $$ for mid-range and $$$ for upscale. They compare areas with each other and do not quote nightly rates, because no rate could be checked for this page. Festival weeks and the cooler months fill rooms first, and the wet months are usually cheaper, though some activities pause.
1. Tapovan and Laxman Jhula
Tapovan is the stretch of lanes above the river near the Laxman Jhula footbridge, and it is where most visitors who come for yoga end up. Studios, cafes, bookshops and small guesthouses sit within a few minutes' walk of each other, and many studios take drop-in classes without a long commitment. You can eat well, take a morning class and be at the water in a short walk.
The trade-off is crowds and noise. The main lane carries pedestrians, scooters and cows, and cafes can be loud into the evening in the busy months. Rooms set back from the lane or higher up the slope are quieter. Be ready for steps, because the hill is steep and baggage porters are useful if you carry a lot.
Check one thing before you book here: whether the footbridge you plan to rely on is open to walkers on your dates. The official page describes Lakshman Jhula as a 137 m suspension bridge built in 1939, but footbridges can be closed to walkers for inspection or repair, and a hotel on the far bank can turn a five-minute walk into a taxi ride. Ask the property how guests reach the cafes and the ghats today.
This is the best base for first-timers, solo travelers and anyone staying four nights or more. It suits people who want to be able to walk to everything, and it is a good place to start if you are still deciding on a school. If you want a silent retreat room, look further out or choose a camp.

2. Ram Jhula and Swarg Ashram
Around Ram Jhula and Swarg Ashram, the town is built around the ghats and the ashrams. Uttarakhand Tourism describes Swargashram as a cluster of ashrams on the eastern bank of the Ganga, most of which offer courses on yoga and spiritual studies, and it places the Beatles Ashram, also called Chaurasi Kutia, in a patch of forest in the same area. Parmarth Niketan, one of the largest ashrams in Rishikesh, stands on the riverbank and hosts an annual yoga festival.
Expect an atmosphere that is more devotional than social. The evening aarti is the daily event, the lanes are crowded with pilgrims, and the old town around the ghats is not the place for a late night. Ashrams set their own house rules, such as gate closing times, quiet zones and meal hours, so read them before you book and ask whether short stays are accepted or only course participants.
This is the best base for pilgrims, for people who want the aarti on their doorstep, and for budget travelers who do not mind simple rooms. It is a poor choice if you want cafes with international menus or late evenings, since the Tapovan side has more of those. If a yoga festival or a major holy day falls in your dates, book weeks ahead and expect higher prices.

3. Muni Ki Reti
Muni Ki Reti is the town-side area, and it is the practical base. Uttarakhand Tourism says taxis and buses run from Rishikesh railway station to Muni-ki-Reti and Swargashram, and that Rishikesh sits on National Highway 58 with buses from Delhi's Kashmiri Gate terminal. Hotels here often have lifts, parking and restaurants that the lane guesthouses lack, and it is the easiest area to leave from at short notice.
You lose some atmosphere. The streets are more like those of an ordinary Indian town, and the cafe scene sits across the river. The Triveni Ghat aarti, which Uttarakhand Tourism describes as lights, drums and chanting with the entire ghat lit with lamps, is a short ride away, so you can still reach it without a long walk. For short stays and one-night stops, this is hard to beat.
It suits families with heavy bags, travelers with early departures, and anyone who wants a hotel with standard services. It is less suited to people who want to wake up in a yoga lane.

4. Shivpuri and riverside camps
Upstream from the town, tented camps and riverside cottages sit near the rafting launch points. Uttarakhand Tourism places Shivpuri 19 km from Rishikesh and calls the run of around 11 km from Shivpuri to Lakshman Jhula the most common rafting stretch. It also names Byasi, 30 km out, as another rafting hub, and lists September to June as the best months for rafting. Many camps bundle rafting, meals and a campfire, and you wake up beside the river.
The cost is distance. You are a drive from the cafes, the ghats and the aarti, and you depend on the camp for dinner and transport. Nights are quiet and dark, which is a plus for some and a problem for others, and it matters if you travel alone: the UK government's advice for India says to avoid isolated areas when alone, particularly for women. Check what the camp includes and which rafting operator it works with, and ask to see the safety gear before you pay.
This base works well for small groups, for people who have already seen the town, and for a one-night stay added to a longer trip. It does not suit a first visit if you want to wander, and it is a weak choice outside the September to June window that the official page names for rafting.

Which base suits which trip?
Match the base to the trip you are taking. A first visit of three or four nights with yoga and cafes fits Tapovan. A pilgrimage or a budget stay with aarti every evening fits Ram Jhula and Swarg Ashram. A one-night transit stop on the way to the hills or the airport fits Muni Ki Reti, and a rafting weekend fits a camp in Shivpuri.
If you are combining Rishikesh with other places, think about the transfer. Rishikesh or Haridwar explains how the two towns divide the work, and Rishikesh in 3 days shows how the days run from each base. You can also split your stay: two nights in Tapovan and one in a camp covers most wishes, and so does a night near the station on arrival followed by two in the lanes.
Solo and women travelers: choose the base by the street
The UK government's advice for India says there is a risk of sexual assault, including attacks on female foreign visitors in tourist areas, and that women often experience verbal and physical harassment. It advises avoiding isolated areas, including beaches, when alone at any time of day, and avoiding hailing taxis alone on the street at night. App-based taxis and pre-paid services are widely available, and many hotels offer transfers.
Turn that into a booking rule. A lane base with foot traffic, such as Tapovan or the Ram Jhula side, makes the walk to dinner easy, but pick a property on a lit street and ask how late the gate stays open. A remote camp or a hill cottage is fine in a group and a harder choice alone. If you arrive late, book a transfer from your hotel rather than finding a ride at the station, and have the property's address and phone number saved offline. None of this is a reason to skip Rishikesh. It is a reason to prefer a base where help is a few doors away.
Registration, rules and what to bring
The same advice says hotels, hostels and other accommodation providers must register foreign guests with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office using an online C-form, and that you need your passport with a valid visa to get a room. Carry the originals when you check in, and expect to be asked for copies. Ashrams that take guests are covered by the same expectation, so ask whether they handle registration before you arrive.
Laws on alcohol vary by state, according to the advice, so do not assume what a guesthouse will serve. Vapes are banned in India. On religious sites, respect local dress, which in practice means covered shoulders and knees on the ghats and in ashrams. Keep your belongings close on the footbridges and in crowds, since the advice also warns of pickpockets and bag snatchers in tourist areas.
Seasons, rafting and the calendar
Uttarakhand Tourism describes pleasant weather in Rishikesh throughout the year, and names September to June for rafting. The UK government says the monsoon usually runs from June to October and brings flash floods and landslides that can close mountain roads, so the wet months are the ones to treat with care. Haridwar's official page adds that the Kanwar mela is held every year in the rainy season, which can crowd the roads around both towns.
For your base, that means the following. In the cooler months, book early and expect the lanes to be busy. In the wet months, choose a refundable rate, avoid a remote camp whose access road could close, and keep a day free around any flight. If you have a respiratory condition, note that the UK advice lists severe air pollution from October to February in north Indian cities, so check air quality for Delhi legs of your trip.
Mistakes to avoid
Do not book a camp for your first night if you arrive late. Do not assume every lane is walkable, because steps and steep slopes are normal. Do not pay in full for a rafting package before you see the operator's safety gear and the stretch of river you will run. Do not choose by price band alone: compare what the rate includes, such as meals, rafting, airport transfers and set curfews, and ask about cancellation terms.
Book early for festival weeks and long weekends, and compare cover on the travel insurance page if you plan to raft, since some policies exclude adventure sports. Before you go, set up an eSIM so maps and ride apps work from the airport, because signal can drop in the side valleys. Check the India e-Visa page for your passport and the online e-arrival card, which can be completed up to 72 hours before arrival. Read getting around India for the train to the region and the flight to Dehradun.
Domande frequenti
What is the best area to stay in Rishikesh?
Tapovan and the lanes near Laxman Jhula for most first trips: cafes, yoga studios and river walks within minutes. Choose the Ram Jhula and Swarg Ashram side if the ghats and the evening aarti matter more.
Is it better to stay in Rishikesh or Haridwar?
Rishikesh for yoga, cafes, rafting and a slower pace; Haridwar for the larger pilgrim city and a main railway station. Both have taxis and buses between them, so many people base in one and visit the other.
Can you stay in an ashram in Rishikesh?
Yes, many ashrams in the Swargashram area take guests, often with house rules such as curfews, quiet zones and set meal hours. Ask whether short stays are accepted and whether they handle foreign-guest registration.
Do I need a car in Rishikesh?
No. Walking, shared autos and e-rickshaws cover the town. A taxi helps for airport runs, for Shivpuri camps and for a day trip to Haridwar or the hills.
When should I book a place to stay in Rishikesh?
As soon as your dates are fixed for festival weeks, long weekends and the cooler months. The wet months are quieter and usually cheaper, but rafting and some roads are affected, so choose a refundable rate.
What documents do I need to check in?
Your passport with a valid visa. The UK government says accommodation providers must register foreign guests with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office, so carry originals and ask the property how it files the form.
