Church of St. Anne

The Church of St.

The Church of St. Anne stands on Batthyány Square in Budapest’s Buda district, close to the metro station of the same name. Its twin towers are easy to spot from across the river, and at night they are illuminated in blue. Inside, murals and painted decoration give the church a warm, intimate feel. The parish dates to 1390; the present church was completed in 1761. Entry is free, and several other churches are within a short walk.

The parish of St. Anne was founded in 1390 and re-established in 1687. Work on the present church began in 1740 to plans by architect Kristóf Hamon. After Hamon’s death, Máté Nöpauer completed the building in 1761.

The church stands on Batthyány Square, below Buda Castle. Its two towers are visible from across the Danube and from the hills around the castle, making them a useful landmark when exploring this part of Buda.

Murals and painted decoration draw the eye inside. The ceiling sits lower than the soaring ceilings found in many churches, and the interior has a more intimate feel. Dark tones of black and brown, with gold details, give the space a warm, restrained character.

The church is open to the public without an admission charge. Special services and pipe organ recitals have also taken place here, so check for current events if you would like to attend one.
