Prasonisi Beach sits at the southern tip of Rhodes, where a narrow strip of sand links the main island to a small islet. The Aegean and the Mediterranean meet here, and the two sides of the beach feel very different. The windy side suits kitesurfing and windsurfing, while the calmer side has shallow water for paddling and gentle swimming. Sunbeds, umbrellas and a few restaurants are near the entrance. Come for the two seas and the wind, then walk up the hill toward the lighthouse if the heat allows.

Where the two seas meet

Prasonisi Beach

Prasonisi lies at the southernmost point of Rhodes. At low tide it is a peninsula joined to the island by a sandy strip. In winter, when the water rises, the link is covered and the islet becomes an island.

The beach stretches for about three kilometres in total, with sea on both sides. Loggerhead turtles visit the area now and then.

The two sides differ in wind and water. The windy side is the one that draws kitesurfers and windsurfers, and waves can be large there. Swimming is not the main activity on this side.

The calmer side has shallow water suited to paddling and gentle swimming, including with children. Sand dunes line the shore. On windy days the sandbar can be hidden under the water, so check the conditions before you wade out.

Walking up to the lighthouse

A path climbs the hill to the lighthouse at the far end of the second hill. From the top you can see wide views over the beach and the water on both sides.

The path has no shade, so the walk is hot in the middle of the day. Some visitors find little more at the top than the view, so decide on the climb once you see the hill.

Rentals, food and services

Watersports schools and rental shops operate near the beach, with lessons for beginners and gear for experienced riders. Sunbeds and umbrellas are rented in a small area. One umbrella with two sun loungers has cost 25 euros, so confirm the price when you arrive.

Several restaurants sit before the sand, with a good range of dishes at reasonable prices. Bars and a small supermarket are also nearby. Parking is free.

Kitesurfers and windsurfers fill the windy side in good conditions, so the area can feel busy at those times.

Keeping the beach clean

Some visitors have found litter on the sand, including plastic bottles and old furniture. Carrying out your own rubbish and bringing a bag helps keep the beach pleasant for everyone who visits.
