Stay in Argostoli for a first visit, because it has the airport, the shops and the most central position. Choose Fiskardo or Assos for a village in the north, Skala for a beach week in the south and Sami for ferries, the caves and a day on Ithaca. Kefallonia is large, so pick the coast where you will spend your days and rent a car.

How to choose
Kefallonia is the largest of the Ionian islands, and it is spread out. The beaches, caves and villages that bring people here lie 30 to 60 minutes apart on steep roads, so where you sleep decides how much of your holiday you spend driving. The Kefallonia travel guide covers the island at a glance; this page settles the base, and shows how it fits with a wider Greece trip.
Three things shape the choice. The first is what you want to see: Myrtos, Assos and Fiskardo are in the north, Skala and the Mount Ainos area in the south, and Melissani and Drogarati near Sami in the east. The second is the mood you want in the evening, from a harbor lined with tavernas to a quiet lane and a view. The third is how you arrive, since the airport sits just south of Argostoli and the ferries land at Poros and Sami.
The price bands below are for a double room per night: $ is a simple guesthouse or apartment, $$ a mid-range hotel or well-equipped apartment, $$$ an upscale stay in a prime location. Bands change a great deal between August and May, so treat them as a guide and check the total at booking. Almost every base here assumes a rental car; the Getting around Greece page explains how to compare cars, buses and boats.
1. Argostoli
Argostoli is the island's capital, on a bay on the west side, and it is the most practical base for a first visit. The waterfront has cafés, the Lithostroto shopping street runs through the center, and the market and harbor give the town some life outside the tourist season. The airport is a short ride away, and the town is the departure point for the short ferry crossing to Lixouri on the other side of the bay.
The strength is position and services. From Argostoli you reach Skala, Poros and the south in under an hour, the beaches near Lassi in minutes and the east coast in about 45 minutes. Supermarkets, car rental offices, pharmacies and restaurants are all here, which matters if you arrive late or travel with children. The hotel and apartment stock is wide, and prices are generally lower than in Fiskardo.
The trade-off is that Argostoli is a working town, not a resort village. It has no beach in the center, and the north is a long drive away, so Assos and Fiskardo become day trips of an hour or more each way. The streets are busy in the evening in summer, and rooms on the main roads can be noisy. If you want a harbor village or a beach at the door, look at the other four bases below.

Stay in Argostoli when the waterfront and restaurants on foot matter most.

2. Fiskardo
Fiskardo, at the northern tip, is the island's best-known village. It was spared by the 1953 earthquake that damaged most of Kefallonia, so its old stone houses and pastel facades remain, and tavernas line the harbor. Yachts and small boats fill the quay in summer, and boat trips and small coves lie within easy reach.
The strength is atmosphere. The evenings are the draw: a table by the water, a slow walk along the quay and a quiet harbor after the day visitors leave. It is also a good base for the northern coast, with Assos and Myrtos within reach and a seasonal ferry link to nearby islands. For couples and sailors, it is hard to beat.
The cost is distance and price. The drive from the airport takes about an hour or more, the village is small, and rooms are among the most expensive on the island, with the best selling out in July and August. There is no big sandy beach in the village, and the south is far away. If you plan to explore both ends of the island, split your stay or choose a more central base. Our Kefallonia in 5 days route shows how the north fits into a loop.

3. Assos
Assos is a small village on a narrow peninsula on the west coast, with pastel houses around a little harbor and a Venetian fortress on the headland above. A path climbs to the fortress, and the views over the bay are among the best on the island. It is smaller and quieter than Fiskardo, with a handful of tavernas and a few rooms, and the rhythm of the day follows the sun.
The strength is calm and access to Myrtos. The beach is about 20 to 30 minutes away by car, so you can reach it early or late, when it is least crowded. Walkers can follow the headland path, and photographers will find soft light in the morning and evening. It is also a good base for a few nights of doing very little.
The cost is isolation. There is no nightlife and no supermarket on the doorstep, and parking is limited, so a rental car and some patience are needed. In August the village fills with day visitors, which changes the mood from midday to late afternoon. If you want shops, buses and a choice of restaurants every night, you will find Assos limited.
Worth it if you want quiet lanes and Myrtos nearby and can do without nightlife.
Assos, Greece
- Pro: Quiet lanes and a harbor view
- Pro: Myrtos within a short drive
- Contro: Few restaurants and tight parking

4. Skala
Skala sits on the south coast, with a long beach of sand and fine gravel that runs for kilometers. The village has tavernas, small shops and apartments rather than big resorts, and the mood is relaxed and family friendly. Loggerhead turtles nest on beaches in this part of the island in summer, and local rules protect them, so follow the posted signs and the guidance of the local turtle groups.
The strength is the beach and the easy pace. You can swim from the doorstep, eat at a taverna on the sand and still reach Poros, Argostoli and the ruins and wineries of the south in under an hour. It is the best base for a beach week, and a good one for families with young children, since the water is shallow and the village is flat.
The trade-off is the driving. Sightseeing in the north or the east takes a long day, so Skala works best if the beach is the point and the caves and Myrtos are one or two day trips. The evening scene is quiet, with tavernas and a few bars. If you want sights on your doorstep, choose a base further north.

If you’re happy to stay beyond Skala’s centre, this apartment is 5.3 km away

5. Sami
Sami is the east-coast port, where ferries from Patras arrive and where the short boat to Ithaca leaves. It is a small, practical town with a waterfront promenade, tavernas and a pebble beach. The Melissani cave lake and the Drogarati cave are a few minutes away by car, and Antisamos beach, set below green hills, is a short drive from the town.
The strength is the position for the east. If you arrive by ferry, you are already here, and a day on Ithaca needs no long drive. The caves can be done early or late, when the tour buses are fewer, and the nearby village of Agia Efimia has a harbor with tavernas for a quieter evening. Prices are generally lower than in Fiskardo.
The trade-off is a plainer setting. Sami is a port town rather than a postcard village, and the evenings are calm. The best of the west and the north takes a long drive, so use it as a base for the east and a day or two of exploring, not for a trip that needs both ends of the island. Check opening days and boat times for the caves and the Ithaca ferry before you plan, since they change with season and weather.

If your plan is the east, the caves and the Ithaca boat, Sami is the base.

When to book, and what to watch for
Book early for July and August, when rooms in Fiskardo and Assos go first and rental cars run short. May, June, September and October are calmer, with warm sea and fewer crowds, and a few weeks' notice is usually enough. Many hotels and tavernas close from November to March, so check what is open if you travel in winter.
Think about the car before the room. A small car copes best with narrow village lanes, and you should book it with your flights or ferry. Ask your hotel about parking, since Fiskardo and Assos have limited space near the water. If you split the stay, put the longer drive on a day with nothing else planned.
Once the base is set, plan the rest. Use Kefallonia in 5 days to build a route, and read Kefallonia, Zakynthos or Corfu if you are still choosing the island. An eSIM helps with navigation on switchback coast roads, and travel insurance is worth comparing for rental-car excess and ferries delayed by wind.
Domande frequenti
Where is the best place to stay in Kefallonia for a first visit?
Argostoli. It is the capital, it sits close to the airport and it has the widest choice of restaurants, shops and rooms. It is also central, so Skala, Poros and the Lixouri ferry are within reach, though the north takes longer.
Is Fiskardo worth staying in?
Yes, for a couple or a quiet stay. It is a harbor village of old stone houses in the north, with tavernas around the water and boat trips nearby. It costs more than other bases and is about an hour or more from the airport.
Where should families stay in Kefallonia?
Skala, for a long sandy beach, tavernas and apartments close to the sea. Argostoli suits families who want services and a choice of beaches nearby, while Sami has an easy Antisamos beach and the caves close at hand.
Can you stay in Kefallonia without a car?
Only in Argostoli, Skala or Sami, and with limits. Buses are thin outside the capital, and the best beaches, caves and northern villages need a car or a tour. Rent a small car for most trips.
Is it better to stay in one place or move around?
For four to five days, one base is enough if you accept some long drives. For a week or more, split the stay between the north and the south, since crossing the island takes a good part of a day.
When should you book a Kefallonia stay?
Book early for July and August, when rooms in Fiskardo and Assos go first, and rental cars run short. In May, June, September and October you can usually book a few weeks ahead.
