Temple of Athena Nike

The Temple of Athena Nike stands on the southwest side of the Acropolis of Athens, beside the Propylaea entrance.

The Temple of Athena Nike stands on the southwest side of the Acropolis of Athens, beside the Propylaea entrance. Built around 420 BC, this compact Ionic temple was dedicated to Athena in her aspect as the goddess of victory. Its balanced proportions and carved friezes reward a closer look, especially the relief of Nike adjusting her sandal. From its high position, you can also take in views over Athens. It is a small stop within the larger Acropolis visit, and easy to pass if you focus only on the Parthenon.

Temple of Athena Nike

The Temple of Athena Nike occupies a small bastion on the southwest side of the Acropolis, beside the Propylaea. Its position puts it close to the route into the sacred plateau, where the temple was dedicated to Athena as a bringer of victory. Nike is the Greek word for victory, and Athena Nike joins that idea with the city’s patron goddess.

Built around 420 BC and designed by Kallikrates, the temple is an early fully Ionic building on the Acropolis. Its four-column layout and compact scale give it a different character from the larger monuments nearby. The stonework and carefully balanced proportions are best appreciated at close range.

Friezes and the Nike reliefs

Carved scenes on the temple’s friezes include battles from history and mythology. The reliefs connect the building’s religious purpose with the Athenians’ hopes for success in war. The temple’s surrounding parapet was also decorated with reliefs of winged Nikai, or figures of Victory.

One well-known carving shows Nike bending to adjust her sandal. The version at the temple is a replica; the original is displayed at the Acropolis Museum. Take a moment to examine the figures rather than viewing the building only from the path. Their detail is a particular reason to stop at this smaller monument.

Damage and reconstruction

The temple was dismantled in 1686, when Ottoman soldiers used its stones to build a defensive wall. It was reconstructed in the 19th and 20th centuries. Its present form therefore reflects both the ancient building and later efforts to restore it.

The high bastion gives the temple a clear outlook across Athens. From here, the view is part of the visit, but the location also explains why the building sits so prominently beside the Acropolis entrance. Pair a closer look at its columns and sculpture with time at the nearby Erechtheion and Parthenon.
