Kolona Beach lies on Kythnos’s north-west coast, north of Merichas and about three kilometres from Chora. The double-sided shoreline
Kolona is a narrow sandbar that connects Kythnos with a small rocky islet. Its position creates two shores, so the sea borders the sand on either side. The coastline has golden, coarse gravel, and the surrounding gentle slopes have a bare, moonlike appearance.
The beach sits in the bay of the same name on Kythnos’s north-west side, north of Merichas and opposite Apokrousi Beach. Its unusual shape is the defining feature of the visit: from the strip of sand, you can look out over water in both directions.
Getting to the beach
You can reach Kolona by road or by boat from the port. The drive follows a narrow, rocky track, so take care on the way in and out; a mini SUV is recommended in the supplied travel advice. The road can be difficult if vehicles meet on a tight section.
