Stay in Corfu Town if you have no car or want an old town, in Kassiopi or the northeast for calm pebble coves, in Paleokastritsa for cliffs and boat trips, and in Sidari or Agios Gordios for sandy beaches. Corfu is bigger than it looks and the roads are slow, so choose one coast, or split a week between town and a beach.

How to choose a base in Corfu
Corfu is a long, curved island, not one resort, and the base you pick decides how much of your holiday is spent in a car. The Corfu travel guide covers the whole island and how it fits into Greece.
Corfu looks small on the map, but the roads are narrow, winding and shared with buses, scooters and goats. A trip from Corfu Town to the far north can take an hour or more, and the west coast roads are slower still. The simplest rule is to pick one coast and stay put for most of the week, rather than sleeping in three places and spending half of each day moving luggage. If you have seven nights, two bases work well: two or three nights in Corfu Town for the sights, then four or five on a coast for swimming.
Three questions narrow the choice quickly. Do you want to rent a car? Without one, Corfu Town is by far the easiest base, because buses and taxis radiate from it and the old town is walkable. With one, any coast works, and the northeast and west reward the extra driving. What kind of beach do you want? The northeast has pebble and rock coves with clear water, the north and southwest have long sandy beaches, and the west has dramatic cliffs and small bays. And when are you traveling? In July and August the roads and parking fill, so shoulder months give you more room.
Price bands below are per night for a double room: $ is a simple hotel or apartment, $$ a mid-range hotel, $$$ an upscale hotel or villa. Rates swing widely between shoulder months and August, so treat the bands as a guide and check current prices at booking. Greece also adds a nightly accommodation charge that varies by season and category, so check the final price; our note on tourist taxes in Europe explains how these fees work.
1. Corfu Town
Corfu Town is the island's capital, with a UNESCO-listed old town of narrow lanes, tall Venetian houses, a French-style arcade and two fortresses. It is the best base for a first trip, because you can walk to the Spianada, the Old Fortress and dozens of restaurants, and the airport and port are minutes away. Our Corfu Town guide covers what to see and how to avoid the cruise-ship crowds.
It is also the easiest base without a car. Local and intercity buses leave from town for most of the island, taxis are plentiful and you can book day tours from your hotel. The trade-off is the beach: the town has a small city beach and rocky swimming spots, but the best coves and sand are 30–60 minutes away. Many visitors split a trip, taking two or three nights here and then moving to the coast.
Accommodation ranges from restored old-town houses and boutique hotels to simple apartments and larger hotels along the Garitsa seafront. Rooms inside the old town are charming but can be noisy at weekends and hard to reach with a car, so ask about parking and luggage access before you book.

Choose Corfu Town when the Spianada and harbor on foot matter more than a beach.

2. Kassiopi and the northeast
The northeast coast faces Albania across a narrow channel, and it is the calmest and prettiest stretch for swimming. Kassiopi is a small harbor village with a ruined castle, a row of tavernas and pebble coves on either side, and the coast road west and south holds smaller bays. Behind it, Mount Pantokrator rises over the island, and villages such as Old Perithia are good for walks and long lunches.
This is a base for people who want quiet evenings, clear water and views, and who accept a drive for groceries and sights. It suits couples and small groups renting a villa, and it gives easy access to the north coast and Sidari. Corfu Town is about an hour away, so plan it as a day trip, not a daily commute.
Accommodation is mostly villas, apartments and small hotels, with a few resorts along the coast. The beaches are pebble or rock, so bring water shoes. Evenings are lively in Kassiopi in high summer and calm in spring and autumn.

3. Paleokastritsa
Paleokastritsa is the west coast's best-known village, a string of small bays under steep green cliffs, with a hilltop monastery and boats for hire at the water's edge. The scenery is the main draw: clear water, sea caves and sunsets over the Ionian Sea. It is the best base on the island for boat trips and for people who like cliffs more than long beaches.
It is also one of the busiest spots in high summer, when coaches arrive from Corfu Town and the road in is slow. Parking is tight, and the village has a few places to eat but fewer than the town. Staying here means you see it in the quiet early morning and evening, which is when it is at its best. The hills behind hold villages such as Lakones, with viewpoints, and Angelokastro, a Byzantine castle on a cliff that is a short drive away.
Hotels and apartments climb the hillside above the bays. Choose a place with a view and a short walk to the water, since the roads are steep.

If boat trips are on your Corfu list, Paleokastritsa keeps you close to the bays

4. Sidari
Sidari is the north coast's main beach resort, with a long sandy beach, shallow water and a strip of shops, bars and restaurants. The Canal d'Amour, a rock channel and cove just along the coast, is the local landmark and a popular swimming and photo stop. It is the easiest base on the island for families with young children and for travelers on a budget.
The trade-off is atmosphere: Sidari is busy and a little commercial in July and August, with more nightlife than the quiet northeast. Shoulder months are calmer. It also sits far from Corfu Town, so a day there is a long drive, though the north coast villages and Kassiopi are within easy reach.
Most lodging is apartments, studios and mid-range hotels, with good choices for families who want a kitchen. Booking early matters in summer, when the best places fill first.

5. Agios Gordios and the southwest
Agios Gordios is a long west-coast beach below steep, olive-covered hills, with a small village of tavernas and apartments behind it. It is quieter than Sidari, closer to the airport and the town than the north, and a good choice for a beach week with a rental car. The nearby villages of Pelekas and Sinarades offer hill views and traditional lunches, and the southern roads lead on to Lefkimmi and the quieter south.
Weather and swell matter on the west coast. Afternoon breezes can make the sea lively, and in rough weather the beach is less comfortable. Check conditions, and have a backup plan such as a visit to Corfu Town or the more sheltered northeast.
Rooms here are apartments and small hotels, and prices are lower than in Paleokastritsa or Kassiopi. Evenings are calm outside high summer.

Booking tips for Corfu
Book early for July and August, when the best apartments and sea-view rooms go first, and for Orthodox Easter, when rooms in town fill with visitors and locals. Late May, June and September give a better balance of warm sea, open businesses and lower prices. Some small hotels in the north and west close from late autumn to spring, so check opening dates.
Book the room first, then the car. A rental car decides whether a coast base works, and summer supply is limited, so reserve it with your room. Our Getting around Greece page explains how to compare car hire, buses and ferries. If you arrive from outside Europe, the border check under the EES happens at your first Schengen airport, so see EES explained before you plan a short connection.
Get an eSIM from our connectivity guide before you go, since signal can fade on the west coast and in the hills. If you build the week from our Corfu in 5 days plan, you can match each night to a day. For dates, read the best time to visit Corfu.
Compare cover in our travel insurance guide before you book non-refundable rooms.
Domande frequenti
Where is the best place to stay in Corfu for a first visit?
Corfu Town if you want sights, restaurants and the airport close by, with beaches reached by bus or taxi. If you will rent a car and care more about swimming, split the trip: two nights in town, then a coast such as Kassiopi or Paleokastritsa.
Is it better to stay in Corfu Town or by the beach?
Stay in town for a short trip or without a car, because the old town, fortresses and harbor are on foot. Stay on the coast for a beach week, because the town has no real beach and the best coves are 30–60 minutes away.
Which part of Corfu is best for families?
Sidari and Agios Gordios have long sandy beaches and shallow water, which suits young children. Check the wind and swell for west-coast beaches before you commit, and book apartments with a kitchen if you want flexibility.
Do you need a car if you stay in Kassiopi or Paleokastritsa?
Yes for most stays. Both have a village center on foot, but supermarkets, other beaches and Corfu Town are far by bus. Rent for the whole stay, or for two or three days, and use taxis for evenings.
How many nights should you spend in each place?
Two or three nights is the minimum that makes a move worth the time. In a week, use two bases: town plus a coast, or two coasts. Five or six hops in a week mostly means packing and driving.
When should you book Corfu hotels?
Book early for July and August, and for Orthodox Easter weekend when rooms in town fill. May, June and September have better choice and prices. Some small places in the north and west close from late autumn to spring, so check dates.
