Prison of Socrates

On the Hill of the Muses, southwest of the Acropolis, the Prison of Socrates is a cave-like structure cut into the rock. Its barred openings, stone stairways and water channels give the site a distinctive look, though you can only view the caves from outside. The connection to Socrates is traditional, not certain. Visit for a quiet pause among the hill’s trees and a different view of the Acropolis, or stop here on a walk through the surrounding historic area.

The caves are traditionally identified as the place where Socrates was held before his execution, but that identification is uncertain. At least two places on Filopappou Hill have been associated with his imprisonment. The structure’s proximity to the Acropolis and the Agora helped fuel the story.

Socrates was sentenced to death in 399 BC. The caves are not confirmed as his prison, and the building where he may have been held is thought to have stood near the Agora and no longer exists.

Three openings cut into the stone give the structure its prison-like appearance. Bars block the entrances, so visitors look into the chambers from outside. Stone stairways and water channels are among the details to notice as you walk around the site.

The surrounding Hill of the Muses has trees and shaded places to pause. The Prison is one stop among several nearby historic sites, including the Sanctuary of the Muses and the Church of Saint Demetrius.
