Cologne or Düsseldorf: which Rhine city to choose, and where to sleep

Cologne has the cathedral, museums and a bigger old town; Düsseldorf has Altbier, fashion streets and an easy airport. How they compare, how to combine them and which to use as a base.

In breve

Choose Cologne if you want a famous landmark, museums and a larger old town. Choose Düsseldorf if you want a smooth airport arrival, shopping and a polished riverfront. Regional trains link them all day, so sleep in one and day-trip to the other rather than splitting nights.

The verdict

Cologne and Düsseldorf are the two big Rhine cities in North Rhine-Westphalia, and they sit close enough that the real question is where to sleep, not whether to see both. Cologne has the famous cathedral, a larger old town and more museums. Düsseldorf is smaller, tidier and built around a riverfront, shopping streets and a long run of brewhouse pubs. The Cologne travel guide and the Düsseldorf travel guide cover each city in detail, and the Germany guide shows where they fit in a wider trip.

The practical answer for most visitors is to pick one hotel and visit the other city on a day trip. Regional trains link the two cities all day, so a second hotel mostly costs you a check-out morning and a check-in afternoon. Check the operator's timetable for your date, because journey times vary with the type of train and no one number applies to every departure.

Choose Cologne if this is your first trip to the Rhineland, if you arrive by train, or if you have a weekend and want a landmark, museums and a big old town. Choose Düsseldorf if you land at its airport, if you are in town for a trade fair, or if shopping, a polished promenade and quieter evenings matter more than sightseeing.

Cologne: the cathedral city

Cologne is built around its cathedral, which stands beside the main station. The old town around it mixes rebuilt streets, brewhouses and squares, and it is large enough to fill a day without feeling thin. The Roman-Germanic Museum and Museum Ludwig sit close to the cathedral, which gives a rainy day a clear plan. Beyond the center, the Belgian Quarter, Ehrenfeld and the Rhine bank at Deutz give you different moods for the evening.

The cathedral is the one place where Cologne has a hard rule you must plan around. According to the cathedral's own site, a ticket has been required for tourist visits to the interior since 1 July 2026. Interior visits run Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 17:45 with last admission at 17:30, and on Sundays and church holidays from 13:30 to 16:30 with last admission at 16:15. The tower is open 9:00 to 18:00 from March to October and 9:00 to 16:00 from November to February, with last admission 30 minutes before closing, and the climb is 533 steps to a platform about 100 meters up. The central ticket office is at Roncalliplatz 2 and, per the site, opens daily from 9:00 to 17:30. Hours can change at short notice for construction or events, so check the official page the week you go. The Cologne in 2 days itinerary builds a route around these rules, and where to stay in Cologne compares the main bases.

Cologne is not the right pick if you want a calm, polished stay. The streets around the station can be loud, parts of the center feel worn, and the city is busiest around Carnival, which peaks in the days before Ash Wednesday, and during the Christmas market season. Rooms near the cathedral fill first on those dates.

Düsseldorf: the polished riverfront

Düsseldorf is the state capital, a fashion and business city with a riverside promenade, a dense Altstadt of brewhouse pubs and the shopping boulevard called the Königsallee. The Medienhafen, a former harbor now lined with bold contemporary buildings, is the main modern sight and sits a short distance from the center. The city feels calmer and easier to read than Cologne, which suits a first visit to Germany or a short break.

The airport is a real advantage. Düsseldorf Airport has rail connections, and the airport's own site lists the options under getting there by rail, so you can reach the center without a taxi. For travelers flying in from outside Europe, a Düsseldorf base means less time on a train after landing. The city also hosts large trade fairs through the year, which push hotel prices up and fill rooms across the region, so check the fair calendar before you book.

Düsseldorf has fewer headline sights than Cologne. One day covers the Altstadt, the promenade and the Medienhafen, and a second day adds a museum or a trip to Cologne, Essen or Aachen. It suits one or two nights better than a long stay. It is not the right pick if you want a big landmark, a deep museum list or a sense of old-world scale, because the city is modern and compact by comparison.

The table keeps to what can be checked on official pages and leaves out journey times and fares that change by train and date.

The trade-off is plain: Cologne wins on sights and variety, and Düsseldorf wins on airport convenience and polish. Neither wins on price, because both cities raise rates for trade fairs, Carnival and the Christmas season. On beer, Kölsch and Altbier are both top-fermented, but Kölsch is pale and light while Altbier is darker and maltier. Each city is proud of its own and a little wary of the other's, so one glass in each place is a fair test.

Which one should you use as a base?

Match the base to how you arrive and what you want from the evenings.

If you arrive by train from Frankfurt, Amsterdam or Brussels, Cologne is the simpler base. The station sits beside the cathedral, so you drop your bags and walk. If you fly into Düsseldorf, sleep there on the first night and decide about Cologne after you have slept. If you fly into Cologne Bonn, use Cologne.

If your trip has a trade fair attached, sleep in Düsseldorf and accept the price. If you are on a budget, compare both cities for your exact dates rather than assuming one is cheaper, since fair weeks and Carnival can reverse the usual order. If you travel with children, Cologne gives more to do on foot near the station, while Düsseldorf's promenade and parks are easy with a stroller.

If you only have one night, Cologne is the better use of it, because the cathedral and old town reward an unhurried evening. If you only have a half day, spend it in Cologne for the same reason. Two nights split between the cities rarely makes sense: the move costs a morning and gains little.

The Cologne & Northern Rhineland guide shows how the region's cities fit together if you plan more than these two, and Bonn and Aachen are the natural next stops from a Cologne base.

Doing both

A day trip from Cologne to Düsseldorf works well. Leave after breakfast, walk the Altstadt before lunch, follow the promenade to the Medienhafen in the afternoon and return in the early evening. The reverse trip suits an early start, because the cathedral and museums need more time than a quick lunch stop allows.

On tickets, the Deutschlandticket is worth knowing about. Deutsche Bahn's page says it costs 63 euros per month, is sold only as a subscription that you can cancel monthly, and is valid on buses, trams, U-Bahn, S-Bahn and regional trains (RB and RE) but not on long-distance IC, EC or ICE services. For a short visit, a single regional ticket is usually simpler than a subscription. If you will be in Germany for a month or more and plan many regional trips, the subscription can pay off, and the Eurail Pass guide explains when a pass beats single tickets. Check the last train home before a late dinner, and note that service can be thinner on Sundays and holidays.

Book early for Carnival, the Christmas markets and fair weeks in either city. If you are arriving from outside the Schengen area, read EES explained to see how passport control works now, and check tourist taxes in Europe because several German cities add a local overnight charge to hotel bills.

A rainy day in either city

Cologne's rainy-day plan is easy: the cathedral interior, the treasury, the Roman-Germanic Museum and Museum Ludwig are all within a short walk of each other, and the brewhouses fill the gaps. Düsseldorf's is thinner but workable: covered shopping on and around the Königsallee, the Altstadt pubs and a museum or two. If the forecast is bad for both days, spend the wet day in Cologne and keep Düsseldorf for the dry one, because its best parts are outdoors.

Mistakes to avoid

The first mistake is booking two hotels for a short stay. The second is arriving at the cathedral without a ticket, since the interior now needs one; buy online or allow time at the ticket office. The third is ignoring the fair calendar in Düsseldorf and the Carnival dates in Cologne until the rates have already jumped. The fourth is climbing the tower late in the day: last admission is 30 minutes before closing and 533 steps are not a sprint. The last is carrying valuables loosely in stations. UK government advice for Germany says crime levels are similar to the UK and tells travelers to be particularly vigilant at airports, railway stations and in crowded public places.

Entry and practical notes

UK government travel advice, which applies to UK passport holders and should be read as UK-specific, says Germany follows Schengen rules: you can travel without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and your passport must have been issued less than 10 years before arrival and have an expiry date at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area. Other nationalities should check their own government's rules. Get an eSIM for Germany before you land so you can pull up tickets and train times, and consider travel insurance for a booking made far ahead.

Domande frequenti

Is Cologne or Düsseldorf better to visit?

Cologne for a first trip, with the cathedral, museums and a larger old town. Düsseldorf is smaller and more polished, and it suits shopping, Altbier and a quick city break. Many visitors see both because regional trains link them all day.

How far is Düsseldorf from Cologne?

Close enough for a day trip either way. Regional and long-distance trains run all day, and the journey time depends on the type of train, so check the Deutsche Bahn timetable for your date instead of relying on one figure.

Should I stay in Cologne or Düsseldorf?

Cologne if you arrive by train or want the most sights near the station, Düsseldorf if you fly into its airport or visit for a trade fair. Do not split a two-night trip between them; the move costs a morning and gains little.

What is the difference between Kölsch and Altbier?

Both are top-fermented beers. Kölsch is pale and light and belongs to Cologne, while Altbier is dark amber and maltier and belongs to Düsseldorf. Each city is proud of its own and a little wary of the other's.

Does the Deutschlandticket cover trains between Cologne and Düsseldorf?

On regional trains (RB and RE) and S-Bahn, yes, but not on long-distance IC, EC or ICE services. Deutsche Bahn sells it only as a monthly subscription, so for a short visit a single ticket is usually simpler.

Which city is better for Carnival?

Both hold large Carnival celebrations in the days before Ash Wednesday. Cologne's is the larger and busier in the old town, while Düsseldorf has its own parades. Book rooms months ahead in either city.
