The Gorges du Verdon is a river canyon in southeastern France, about 25 km long and up to 700 metres deep. The river Verdon takes its name from the turquoise-green color of its water, set against limestone walls. The gorge runs between Castellane and Moustiers-Sainte-Marie and ends at Lac de Sainte-Croix, an artificial lake. Its deepest stretch runs from Pont de Soleils to l'Imbut, where the river vanishes under rock before reappearing.

Visitors can drive the rim roads, paddle the river in a rented kayak or hike along the gorge. The walls also draw rock climbers, with about 1,500 routes from 20 metres to over 400 metres. The gorge suits travelers who want deep canyon views and water sports in one area and are comfortable on mountain roads. Summer is the busiest period, so spring or early autumn is the better choice for a quieter visit.
