Jardin Exotique d'Èze is a botanical garden at the highest point of Èze village, planted around the ruins of a medieval fortress. Its cacti and succulents, along with other plants that cope with little water, come from every continent. Paths wind between terraces to a rugged lookout. From the top you can see the coast toward Cap Ferrat and, on a clear day, the Esterel Mountains. Visit for the plants and the views, and plan for steps on the way up.

From fortress ruin to garden

The garden sits on the ruins of a medieval fortress at the top of Èze village. A fortress on this site was destroyed in 1706, and the garden was laid out after the Second World War. The work was conceived by the mayor of the time and by the landscape designer Jean Gastaud, who also designed the garden in Monaco.

The old castle walls remain part of the walk. Planting beds and terraces are built into the slope, so the paths rise and turn as you climb.

What grows here

The collection includes more than 400 plants. Cacti and succulents form the core of the garden, and the south-facing side holds spiny plants from desert regions. The north face has caves and a cascade, and it grows lush plants from the Mediterranean and other humid regions.

A large cactus, about 13 metres tall, is the centrepiece. Themed gardens wind around the terraced hilltop, with flowering plants and palms among the cacti.

Statues among the plants

Sculptures by Jean-Philippe Richard stand along the paths. The female figures are named Chloé, Barbara and Isis. Each one addresses passersby with a four-line verse written by the artist.

Read the verses as you pass each figure, then continue up toward the lookout.

The views from the top

The top of the garden looks out over the coast. Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat lies below, and the Esterel Mountains show on the far side. On a clear day, Nice and Cap d'Antibes can be seen. On clear winter days, Corsica is visible in the distance.

Planning your visit

Entry is charged, and the amounts reported differ, so check the official website before you go. Buying tickets online ahead of time can help you avoid the longest queues. The garden is open every day, and early morning is the quietest time.

The climb to the garden is by steps, so allow time and energy for it. The top can get very hot, so bring water, although drinking fountains are on site. A few shaded areas have chairs for a rest. Strollers can manage the village streets, but the garden at the top requires many steps.

Friedrich Nietzsche spent time in Èze while he worked on Thus Spoke Zarathustra. The tropical plants at the top of the village are part of that local story.
