Oxford colleges and museums: what is free and what needs a ticket

Oxford has two kinds of sights, and they behave very differently. The big museums are free and open most days, while the famous colleges and the Bodleian control entry with tickets, timed tours and closure days. Knowing which is which settles most of the planning, and it is the reason this page exists alongside the Oxford in one day route. The Oxford travel guide gives the city overview, and the England guide puts it in context for a wider trip.

The quick version: the Ashmolean and the Pitt Rivers Museum are free, the exhibition galleries at the Bodleian's Weston Library are free, and Christ Church Meadow is open free all year except 25 December. Christ Church itself needs a ticket, and Bodleian library tours need a ticket. Everything else, including most other colleges, depends on the college and the day, so treat any college you have not checked as closed until its own page says otherwise.

Christ Church: how a visit works

Christ Church is both a college and a cathedral, and its visitor page makes it clear that it is a working academic and religious institution. That means full or partial closures happen when areas are used for services or private events, and the college publishes a list of known closures for 2026. Check the list for your date before you buy, and keep the confirmation with you, because a ticket that does not match an open area is a wasted slot.

The visitor page also says that multimedia guides, included in the admission price, are required to visit, and that guiding on site is suspended. In practice you follow a set route using the guide, so allow for the pace the route sets, not your own. There are concession rates for Oxford University card holders, alumni, residents of postcodes OX1 to OX4 and some other groups, and the page explains how to check eligibility. If you are not sure, read the details before you queue.

The rules are strict because the site is small and busy. Steps and paving can be uneven and slippery when wet, so wear shoes with grip. Seats are available in the Cloister, Cathedral and Ante-Hall, and the college asks you not to sit on steps or pathways. Dogs on leads are welcome in the visitor center, but not inside the college, except assistance dogs. The Meadow behind the college is a separate matter: it is open free of charge throughout the year except 25 December, and it is the best place to rest between sights.

The Bodleian: tours, the Divinity School and free galleries

The Bodleian Libraries run two sets of experiences. The first is the paid tours of the historic library: a 30-minute tour that covers the history and beauty of the library, longer tours on most days, and the Radcliffe Camera and City of Oxford Walking Tour, which now offers more chances to go inside the round reading room. The second is the Weston Library across the road, where the exhibition galleries are free, along with a cafe and shop.

Hours for sightseers are 9:00 to 17:00 Monday to Friday and 10:00 to 17:00 on Saturday and Sunday, with the exhibition galleries on the same hours. The key planning detail is the closures page. The library lists dates when the Divinity School closes all day or early because of events, when 60-minute tours do not run and when all tours become 30-minute tours of Duke Humfrey's Library. On those days, tickets may be sold only in person from the Weston Library. If your day matches one of them, you can still do the 30-minute tour, but you lose the Divinity School.

Current exhibitions give you a reason to add the free galleries to a tour. Wonder of Birds runs until 3 January 2027, and Plain Things Wonders, about how attention to ordinary things changed our understanding of the natural world, opens on 5 November 2026. If you hold a pre-booked tour ticket, go straight to the Old Bodleian through the Great Gate on Catte Street. For tickets and closures, see the Bodleian visitor site.

The Ashmolean and the Pitt Rivers: free, with small catches

The Ashmolean Museum is the larger of the two. Entry is free, it opens at 10am and closes at 5pm with last entry at 4:45pm, and a main shop, Rooftop Restaurant and cafe are open daily. Pre-booking is needed for groups and for ticketed exhibitions, such as the autumn exhibition for which the museum announced tickets, but the permanent collection does not need a slot. The catch is gallery closures: on the date this page was checked, four Western Art galleries on the Level 3 Mezzanine were closed for essential work, covering Sickert and his Contemporaries, Pissarro, the Pre-Raphaelites and 19th Century Art. If one of those is your reason to go, check the list.

The Pitt Rivers Museum is smaller and denser, with cabinets of objects from around the world. Entry is free, and visitor entry is through the Museum of Natural History on Parks Road. It opens at noon on Mondays and at 10am from Tuesday to Sunday, closing at 5pm, and group visits must be booked. The museum also posts date-specific changes, for example a late opening at noon on one Saturday in October, so check the page for your day. Food and drink are not permitted in the galleries, though the Horsebox coffee stand on the lawn serves drinks outdoors.

Which sights suit which traveler

Choose by what you enjoy, not by a checklist. If you love architecture and old books, build the day around the Bodleian tour and the Radcliffe Camera. If you want a cathedral, a great hall and a picture gallery in one place, Christ Church is the strongest single entry. If you prefer paintings and antiquities, the Ashmolean gives you the broadest free collection in the city. If you like the strange and the specific, the Pitt Rivers is the one museum that rewards a slow look at a single cabinet.

Families can split the day. A child who tires of a guided tour is usually happier at the Pitt Rivers, and the Meadow offers space to run. Travelers on a tight budget can build a full day from free venues: the Ashmolean, the Pitt Rivers, the Weston Library galleries and a walk through Christ Church Meadow, adding one paid tour if it matters most. If your visit falls in a wet week, the museums and the galleries are your anchors, and the paid entries are the nice extra.

Colleges you cannot enter, and how to treat them

Oxford has dozens of colleges, and most are not set up for visitors. Some open at set times, some charge, some close during exams or for events, and many simply keep their gates shut to the public. Treat each as separate. Before you plan to enter a college that is not Christ Church, find its own page and read the visiting hours, and assume it is closed if you cannot find them. Many travelers are happier admiring gates, quads visible from the lane and the streets that link them.

Respect signs and porters. Colleges are homes and workplaces, and the lodge at the gate is the authority on who may enter. Keep voices low in the lanes, keep off lawns, and do not photograph people who are working or studying. If a college asks you to leave, do so politely. These habits are the reason colleges tolerate visitors at all, and they keep the lanes pleasant for the next group.

Mistakes to avoid

The first is assuming that a famous college is open. Check the college's own page for the date, not a travel app. The second is arriving at Christ Church with a large bag, a scooter or a picnic, all of which the college does not allow. The third is booking a Bodleian tour without checking the closures list, which names the days when the Divinity School is shut or 60-minute tours do not run.

The fourth is treating a free museum as always open. Hours differ on Mondays at the Pitt Rivers, last entry is earlier than closing at the Ashmolean, and galleries close for works. The fifth is overpacking the day. Two paid entries and one free museum is a full day, and adding more usually means seeing less. If you want help sequencing them, the one-day route puts the controlled entries first, and where to stay in Oxford helps you choose a base close to them.

Set up your phone before you arrive. An eSIM for England keeps ticket codes and maps working in the lanes, and travel insurance covers delays and cancellations. For the entry rules, read UK ETA explained, and for rail options see trains, buses and cars in Britain.

Domande frequenti

Which Oxford museums are free?

The Ashmolean Museum and the Pitt Rivers Museum are free, and so are the Bodleian's Weston Library exhibition galleries. Ticketed exhibitions and group visits need booking, and some galleries close for works, so check the museum's page for your date.

Do you need a ticket for Christ Church?

Yes. Christ Church requires a ticket, includes a multimedia guide in the admission price and lists known closures for services and events. Christ Church Meadow behind it is free all year except 25 December.

Can you visit Oxford colleges for free?

Some colleges allow visitors at set times, others charge or stay closed for exams and events. There is no single rule, so check each college's own page. Assume a college is closed if you cannot find its visiting hours.

Why do Bodleian tours sometimes change?

The Bodleian lists dates when the Divinity School is closed all day or early and when 60-minute tours do not run. On those days only 30-minute tours of Duke Humfrey's Library may be offered, sometimes sold only in person at the Weston Library.

What are the Christ Church bag and photography rules?

Bags larger than 40 x 30 x 20 cm are not allowed and there is no left luggage. Photography is allowed for personal use without tripods. Bicycles, scooters, skateboards and picnics are not permitted inside.
