Staropramen Brewery

Staropramen Brewery is in Smíchov, Prague 5, in a former industrial district by the Vltava. Founded in 1869, it is the Czech Republic’s second-largest brewery. The self-guided exhibition covers beer production and fermentation, followed by a tasting; the bar is a place to try the dark beer and settle in for a drink. A brewery in Smíchov

Staropramen began brewing in 1869 in Smíchov, an area of Prague 5 that was once an industrial centre. Large factory buildings still mark the district, although many former industrial sites have since made way for offices, shops and newer developments.

The brewery is part of a larger complex, and its history is tied to the neighbourhood’s manufacturing past. Its beer is brewed using Czech hops and the traditional double-decoction mash method.

Brewing and tasting

The exhibition introduces the stages of beer production, including fermentation. Staropramen’s process uses large open fermentation vats, followed by lagering at low temperatures. The premium beer can spend as long as 90 days in lager tanks.

The self-guided format lets you move through the exhibition at your own pace before the tasting. The brewery also has a bar, and the on-site Na Verandách restaurant is part of the Potrefená Husa chain. Private events can affect how much time is available for tours and tastings, so groups should confirm their plans in advance.
