Ferdinand I commissioned the palace in 1560 as a gift for his wife, Anne. Leading Italian stonemasons worked on the building, which was designed for court entertainments and events. Its Renaissance design makes it a distinctive stop among the buildings around Prague Castle.

The arcade and relief decoration are among its defining details. Look up at the unusual roof, too. The palace later served as army barracks, before restoration work in the late 19th century changed its entrance approach.

A monumental staircase was added during the 19th-century renovation. Wall paintings on it depict episodes from Czech history, giving the approach to the palace a historical dimension beyond its Renaissance exterior.

The surrounding Royal Garden has paths, a fountain and unusual trees. Its terraced walking route gives you space to pause away from the busier castle area. From the grounds, you can see Prague and the nearby cathedral. The garden is also a useful stop on foot when exploring the area around Prague Castle.
