At the eastern end of Stradun, the Clock Tower rises above Luža Square beside Sponza Palace.

At the eastern end of Stradun, the Clock Tower rises above Luža Square beside Sponza Palace. Built in 1444, it is 31 metres tall and one of Dubrovnik’s most recognisable Old Town landmarks. Look up to spot the bronze bell strikers Maro and Baro, known as the Green Men, and check the clock and sundial from the street. You can also go up the tower for views over the city, though the walk itself is a quick stop if you stay in the square.

The Clock Tower stands at the eastern end of Stradun, Dubrovnik’s main street, beside Sponza Palace in Luža Square. At 31 metres tall, it is easy to pick out above the surrounding Old Town. Its position makes the square a useful place to pause and look back along Stradun, or to take in the nearby landmarks.

The tower was built in 1444. Earthquakes damaged it over the centuries, and it began to lean towards Stradun in the early 19th century. The original structure was later reconstructed in 1929.

The Green Men and the bell

Look up towards the bell for the two bronze figures called Maro and Baro, or the Green Men. They hold mallets and strike the bell. Their green colour comes from the bronze’s patina after exposure to the sea air. The bell was cast in 1506 and weighs two tonnes.

From Stradun, you can also make out the clock and sundial. The figures and the bell give the tower details to look for beyond its large clock face. If you want a view from higher up, the tower can be climbed; the city walls and cable car are also noted for their viewpoints.
