The Costa Rica National Stadium stands in La Sabana Park in San José, a large green space sometimes called the lungs of Costa Rica. It opened in March 2011 and seats about 35,000 people under a long curved roof. Football is its main use, since it is the home ground of the national team, but concerts and extreme sports also fill it. The yearly X-Knights freestyle motocross and BMX event is one of its biggest dates. Walking through La Sabana to reach it is pleasant, and museums are close by.

Why the stadium was rebuilt

The old national stadium was demolished in 2008. The new one was built on the same site between 2009 and 2011, with funding from the Chinese government. The cost was more than $110 million.

It officially opened in March 2011 with a friendly match between the Costa Rican and Chinese national teams, which ended 2-2.

Design and seating

The stadium is mainly used for football, and the national team trains and plays there. It is also a multi-use venue, so it has a running track around the field.

The seating capacity is about 35,000. The stadium has VIP areas, press facilities and comfortable seats. Its open-air structure and curved roof give most seats an unobstructed view.

Events through the year

Beyond league and national team matches, the stadium has hosted concerts, including performances during the Festival de la Luz. In 2014 it staged the final of the FIFA Women's World Cup.

Trade and food fairs have also used the venue. A chocolate fair with tastings, workshops and music was held there in 2018.

X-Knights is the stadium's best-known annual event. It brings freestyle motocross and BMX competitions, with jumps, stunts and large crowds.

Visiting on event days

Plan your arrival around parking, which is the most common complaint about the area. Public transport or a taxi is the simpler choice on busy nights. Walking in from La Sabana is an easier option if the distance is manageable for you.

Inside, food and drink options can be limited, so a meal before you go helps. Check the gate printed on your ticket and allow extra time to find it.

Nearby in La Sabana

The stadium is in the Mate Redondo district, close to the Museum of Costa Rican Art. The Spirogyra Butterfly Garden and the La Salle Natural Science Museum are also nearby.

La Sabana Metropolitan Park is a good place to walk, bike, jog, skate or play tennis before or after a visit.
