Shenwumen, or the Gate of Divine Prowess, is the Forbidden City’s northern gate in Beijing and the usual end point of the Palace Museum visit. Built in 1420, it was first called the Black Tortoise Gate and served palace workers as a rear entrance. Today, visitors leave the museum here. Pause to look north towards Jingshan Park, where trees, pavilions and pagodas shape the view, and notice the gate’s combination of defensive design and ornament.

The gate was built in 1420 and originally named the Black Tortoise Gate. It served as a rear entrance for palace workers. Its position at the northern edge of the Forbidden City reflects its practical role in controlling movement through the palace grounds.

The structure combines defensive elements with architectural detail. Though less imposing than the southern entrance, it remains a substantial historic gateway.

Shenwumen now serves mainly as the exit for visitors to the Palace Museum. It is not an entrance, so plan to start your visit at the southern side of the Forbidden City.

Once outside, look towards Jingshan Park. Its trees, pavilions and pagodas form the northern outlook from the gate. An underground passage provides a route towards the park.
