Beijing National Aquatics Center, better known as the Water Cube, is an Olympic swimming venue in Beijing’s Olympic Green, across from the Bird’s Nest. Its blue, bubble-like exterior is made from translucent, cushion-shaped panels, giving the building a distinct look by day and a striking glow after dark. The center hosted aquatics events at the 2008 Summer Olympics and later became a public aquatics venue. You can walk around the Olympic Park without a ticket; entry to the building or its facilities may require one.

The design of the Water Cube

The Aquatics Center was designed by a consortium that included China State Construction Engineering Corporation, China State Construction International, PTW Architects and Ove Arup. Its square form is wrapped in translucent panels shaped like irregular cushions, creating the appearance of a structure made from bubbles.

That design was chosen with practical aims in mind. The building’s bubble-based structure was intended to divide three-dimensional space efficiently, while its cladding was selected with energy conservation in view. The Water Cube is also known for its extensive use of ETFE, a fluorine-based plastic. Its appearance draws on a modern architectural approach and has also been linked to the traditional Chinese idea of a round heaven and a square earth.

The building hosted swimming and diving events during the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. It was later adapted for public use, with aquatics, fitness and recreation among its functions. The Olympic training pool remains in the center, alongside water-park facilities.

The venue also took on a different role for the 2022 Winter Olympics, when it was known as the Ice Cube and hosted curling events. Its Olympic history is visible in its continuing use as a sports facility, not only in its architecture. For a sightseeing visit, the exterior is the main draw; entering to swim or use other facilities involves a separate visit.
