Toronto Music Garden

Toronto Music Garden is a waterfront garden at 479 Queens Quay W, in Toronto’s Harbourfront area.

Toronto Music Garden is a waterfront garden at 479 Queens Quay W, in Toronto’s Harbourfront area. Its winding paths, flowerbeds, grasses and stone steps trace the six dance movements of Bach’s First Suite for Unaccompanied Cello, a design created with cellist Yo-Yo Ma and landscape architect Julie Moir Messervy. Follow the paths to the grassy amphitheatre beneath a weeping willow, or pause by the lake for harbour and CN Tower views. In summer, free music performances add another reason to linger.

A garden shaped by Bach

The garden translates Johann Sebastian Bach’s First Suite for Unaccompanied Cello into a landscape. Cellist Yo-Yo Ma worked with landscape architect Julie Moir Messervy on the design. Its six sections follow the suite’s six dance movements: Prelude, Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Menuet and Gigue.

The musical idea is expressed through the layout and feel of the garden. Paths curve between planting, stones, changes in height and open spaces. As you walk, each section offers a different setting, from winding routes to grassy steps overlooking the harbour.

Paths, planting and the amphitheatre

Take time to explore the whole garden rather than treating it as a direct waterfront crossing. Paved paths lead past flowerbeds, tall grasses and mature trees, with bridges and quieter places to sit along the way. The Gigue section has a grassy amphitheatre and stage beneath a weeping willow.

The garden is a place to pause as well as walk. Bring a book or picnic and settle into one of the seating areas. The waterfront setting adds views of Lake Ontario and the harbour, while the CN Tower can be seen from the garden.

Summer music in the garden

Free live performances are held in summer, including classical music concerts and community performances. The concert programme has included Thursday and Sunday events, with performances taking place in the outdoor amphitheatre. Dates and scheduling can change, so check the current programme before planning your visit around a concert.

The garden is open around the clock, so you can also visit outside performance times for a quieter walk or a place to sit. Paid parking is available in the area, and the entrance and parking lot are wheelchair accessible.
