Museum of Art of São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand

MASP, the Museum of Art of São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand, is on Avenida Paulista in Bela Vista.

MASP, the Museum of Art of São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand, is on Avenida Paulista in Bela Vista. Lina Bo Bardi designed its striking modernist building, raised above an open plaza on red supports. Inside, the collection brings together Brazilian and international art, including European masters, alongside temporary exhibitions. On the upper floor, many works hang on transparent supports, so you can view them in an unusual, open arrangement. Allow time for both the permanent collection and the changing shows.

MASP stands on Avenida Paulista, its glass-and-concrete form raised above an open plaza. Architect Lina Bo Bardi designed the building, which was completed in 1968. Four supports lift the rectangular structure, leaving a broad, unobstructed space beneath it. The red frame is a defining feature of the avenue’s streetscape.

The plaza is part of the museum’s setting, not simply a forecourt. Its open span can also host gatherings and, on Sundays, an antiques fair. From outside, the building’s elevated form gives you a clear sense of how the museum and public space fit together.

Art from Brazil and beyond

The collection includes Brazilian and international works, with European paintings and sculpture among its strengths. The range spans different periods and artistic traditions, and works by artists such as Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Picasso and Raphael are associated with the collection. Brazilian art is also a significant part of the museum, including works that engage with political and cultural subjects.

The permanent collection shares the museum with temporary exhibitions. These change the focus of a visit; past shows have addressed racism. Check what is on during your trip, then leave time for both the collection and the current exhibition.

The transparent displays

On the upper floor, many paintings are arranged on transparent supports rather than hung against conventional walls. You can look at the artworks in an open layout, moving between the displays. Information about a painting is placed on its reverse, so seeing the work and reading its details involves viewing it from both sides.

The arrangement makes the encounter with each painting different from a standard gallery visit. Take a moment to read the display information as you go, and allow room to move around the supports. The design is an important part of how MASP presents its permanent collection.
