Reach the Old Bridge early, cross to both banks, and climb the Tara tower museum when it opens at 10:00 between April and November. Spend midday in the bazaar lanes and one museum, and return to the bridge in the evening when the day-trip groups have left. Add Blagaj or Počitelj only with a second day.
Mostar in 1 day at a glance
Mostar rewards a plan that treats the Old Bridge twice: once in the morning, when you see it from both banks and climb the tower, and once in the evening, when the day-trip groups have gone. The rest of the day fits two museums, the bazaar lanes and a long lunch. If you have not booked a bed, where to stay in Mostar compares the four bases, and the Mostar travel guide has the facts in one place. For the wider route, the Bosnia & Hercegovina guide shows how Mostar links with Sarajevo and the south.
The order below is built around opening hours and crowds. The Old Bridge Museum has fixed daily hours between April and November, the bridge area is busiest in the middle of the day, and the evening is the calmest time for photographs and a walk. If you arrive by train from Sarajevo, the Sarajevo to Mostar guide compares the ways to get here.
The museum's own working hours page lists the hours for each department, and it is the page to check before you go.
Morning: the Old Bridge and the Tara tower
First hour: the bridge from both banks. Start at the Old Bridge before the day-trip groups arrive. UNESCO describes the bridge as an extraordinary technological achievement of bridge construction in a historic quarter that developed in the 15th and 16th centuries as an Ottoman frontier town. The Herzegovina Museum dates the single-arched stone bridge to 1557 to 1566, built by Mimar Hajrudin to a project of the architect Sinan's school, and records that the bridge and old town were rebuilt after destruction in the 1990s, with the reconstruction of the bridge completed in 2004. The old town and the bridge were included in the UNESCO list in 2005.
Walk across slowly. The stone can be slippery, so wear shoes with grip. Look at the river from both banks: the view from the east bank, near the Tara tower, shows the arch against the old houses, and the view from the bank below shows the river's emerald color. Diving from the bridge is a local tradition, but it does not follow a published schedule, so do not plan the day around it.
10:00: the Old Bridge Museum in the Tara tower. The museum sits in the Tara tower complex on the left bank of the Neretva, next to the bridge. From 1 April to 1 November it opens at 10:00 every day. It presents the reconstruction project of 1999 to 2004, the Tara and Halebija towers and life on and around the bridge, with an authentic archaeological site below the level of the tower's approach and documentation on the upper floors. The observation deck at the top gives a view over the old town and the surrounding area, and it is the best place to understand the layout of the quarter. Allow 45 to 60 minutes.
If you visit outside the April to November window, the museum lists organized visits only, so confirm before you travel and consider arranging the visit in advance.
Midday: the bazaar and a second museum
Bazaar lanes. After the tower, walk the stone lanes of the bazaar. UNESCO lists the bazaar among the elements that make up the old city, along with mosques, churches and synagogues that stood side by side, and the residential mahalas around them. Souvenir shops, copper work and cafés line the lanes. The middle of the day is the busiest time, so use it for the lanes rather than for photographs of the bridge.
Plan lunch away from the bridge terraces if you want a quieter table. Herzegovinian cooking uses grilled meats, pies and stews, and the lanes behind the main route have smaller places. Check prices before you order if you are on a budget, as terraces with a bridge view often charge more.
A second museum. The Herzegovina Museum runs several departments, and two work well in a single day. The MuM Interpretation Center presents an ethnological collection of 70 exhibits and is open from 08:00 to 16:00 every day from 1 April to 1 November, Sundays excluded, with organized visits in other periods. The Džemal Bijedić Memorial House, opened in 1981 as an annex of the museum, is open from 08:00 to 16:00. The museum also runs the archaeological site of the Basilica in Cim and a lapidary of stećak tombstones and sarcophagi. Stećci are the medieval monolithic tombstones that appear on the UNESCO list across the region, and a short stop makes a good complement to the bridge story. Check each department's hours before you go, since they differ.
Mosques in the old town are places of worship, so dress modestly and check visiting times, which change around prayer.

Evening: back to the bridge
Return to the bridge in the late afternoon or evening. By then most day-trip groups have gone, the stone has cooled and the lanes are quieter. Walk the east bank, then the west bank, and pick a terrace with a view of the arch for dinner or a drink. If you stay overnight, you can stroll again after dinner.
If you must leave by train or bus, plan the last stretch carefully. The 2025/2026 railway timetable lists two trains each way between Sarajevo and Čapljina through Mostar, so a late departure may not exist on your day. Read the exact Mostar time on the railway's page and leave a margin for the walk to the station.
What to do in the rain
Mostar has enough indoor options for a wet day, but they are modest. Keep the museums for the rain: the Old Bridge Museum, the MuM Interpretation Center and the Džemal Bijedić Memorial House are all indoors. The covered stretches of the bazaar and a long meal fill the rest.
The stone lanes become slippery after rain, so shoes with grip matter more than any ticket. If the rain is heavy and the forecast is poor for the day, consider moving the Blagaj or Počitelj add-on to another day, since both are outdoor sights.
What is open and when
Plan the order of the day around hours. The Old Bridge Museum opens at 10:00 and runs until 18:00 from 1 April to 1 November. The MuM Interpretation Center and the Džemal Bijedić Memorial House open earlier, at 08:00, and close at 16:00, so if you want both of those and the tower, do the earlier ones first. Winter visits are by organized visit only, so a winter day in Mostar is mainly a walk and a meal. The bridge itself is open at all hours.
In summer, the middle of the day is hot, with typical highs around 32 degrees Celsius in July and August, so shift outdoor walking to the morning and the evening and use midday for indoor stops and lunch. In spring and autumn, the whole day is comfortable.
A second day if you have one
A second day opens three good options. Blagaj is a village at the Buna spring with a dervish house under a cliff. Počitelj is an Ottoman-era stone village stepped up a hillside above the Neretva. The Kravica waterfalls on the Trebižat river are a wide limestone cascade used for swimming in summer. All three are within a short drive of Mostar, and tour operators combine them in a single day. Opening times, entry fees and swimming rules change, so check them with the operator before you go.
Two other directions work well. Sarajevo, 130 km away by road according to the Sarajevo tourist board, is the usual next stop; read Sarajevo in 2 days for what to do there. To the south, Trebinje lies 120 km away, according to the regional tourist organization, and links Mostar with Dubrovnik.
Mistakes to avoid
The first mistake is arriving at the bridge at midday and leaving, which gives the busiest and least pleasant version of the town. The second is assuming the Old Bridge Museum is open all year at the same hours. The third is trying to squeeze Blagaj, Počitelj and Kravica into the same day as the old town without a tour. The fourth is wearing smooth-soled shoes on the stone lanes. The fifth is skipping the practical preparation: an eSIM helps with train times and maps, and travel insurance is worth having for summer heat, swimming stops and road days.
The UK government advises care with pickpockets in tourist areas and staying on roads and paved areas in the countryside because of old landmines. Keep your bag zipped on the bridge and on crowded lanes, and do not leave the path on a walk to a viewpoint.
Getting to Mostar and moving around
Trains from Sarajevo run on the line to Čapljina through Mostar, and the tourist board recommends the route for the Neretva canyon and over 100 tunnels. Buses and cars also work, and the road from Sarajevo is 130 km. Once you are in town, everything in this plan is walkable: the bridge, the bazaar, the Tara tower and the main museums sit within a short distance of each other. The transport planning page covers the rest of the country, and the Mostar day trip or overnight page helps you decide whether one day is the right length.
Domande frequenti
Is one day enough for Mostar?
Yes for the Old Bridge, the Tara tower museum, the bazaar and one more museum. A second day is worth it if you want Blagaj, Počitelj or the Kravica waterfalls without rushing.
When is the Old Bridge Museum open?
The Herzegovina Museum lists the Old Bridge department as open 10:00 to 18:00 every day from 1 April to 1 November. In other months, visits are organized, so check the museum's page before a winter trip.
How long should you spend at the Old Bridge?
Allow about an hour for the bridge, the two banks and the Tara tower view, longer if you visit the museum. Come back in the evening for a second look when the groups have left.
What is there to do in Mostar when it rains?
Use the museums: the Old Bridge Museum, the MuM Interpretation Center with its ethnological collection and the Džemal Bijedić Memorial House. The covered bazaar stretches and a long meal fill the rest.
Can you add Blagaj and Počitelj to a day in Mostar?
Only with a car or a tour and a second day. The sights in town need most of a day, so adding villages turns the plan into a rush. Check opening times and fees with the operators.
