In breve

If your hotel is a Summer Card partner, use that card and buy nothing else for the Zell am See lifts and lidos. If it is not, price the Hike & Swim Ticket (€146 for adults, six days, 2026) against the lifts you actually plan to ride. Choose the SalzburgerLand Card for a trip across the state, and confirm that the attractions you want are on its list.

Which card should you use in Zell am See?

Four cards compete for attention in Zell am See and Kaprun, and the best-value one cannot be bought at all. The answer depends first on your hotel and then on how many lifts you plan to ride. The Zell am See travel guide covers the setting, and the Austria guide places it in the wider trip; this page does the arithmetic of cards for the 2026 season, using the prices and terms published by the Zell am See-Kaprun tourism board and the SalzburgerLand Card site.

The short version is a decision tree. If the hotel issues the Summer Card, use it and skip the rest for the lifts, lidos and lake boat. If it does not, count the paid attractions on your list: the Hike & Swim Ticket makes sense for a lift-heavy week, and single tickets make sense for a short or lazy one. If your plan stretches across the state of Salzburg, the SalzburgerLand Card may beat both, as long as the attractions you want are on its list. Everyone staying overnight also receives the Guest Mobility Ticket, which is transport only.

Prices on this page are the 2026 season prices as listed on 3 October 2026. Seasons start in spring, so the numbers will change, and the structure of the cards can change too. Check the official pages before you buy.

The Summer Card: the best deal, and not for sale

The Zell am See-Kaprun Summer Card is valid from 15 May to 31 October, and the tourism site says plainly that it cannot be purchased. It is issued to guests of participating accommodations from the first night of a stay, in print or in the Zell am See-Kaprun app, and each guest, including children, receives a personal card. It is not transferable.

What it covers is the core of a summer holiday. The premium partners include the Kitzsteinhorn glacier lifts (excluding the 3K K-onnection), the Schmittenhöhe, the Maiskogel family mountain, the Kaprun high mountain reservoirs, a boat trip on Lake Zell, the lidos, the indoor pool in Zell am See, the Sigmund Thun Gorge, several museums and attractions as far away as Mittersill and Leogang. Bonus partners offer discounts instead, among them the electric boat on Lake Zell, a steam train ride between Zell am See and Mittersill, the Krimml Waterfalls and the 3K K-onnection on the Kitzsteinhorn.

The card is financed by a nightly contribution per person, which in 2026 ranges from €7.06 to €10.44 for adults depending on the period, with lower rates for children. That figure is how the card is financed, so what matters for you is the total room price, not the contribution on its own.

Two practical consequences follow. A one-night stay in high summer gets less out of the card than a three-night one, because the best-known attractions only open up on day two. And the card is only as good as your hotel choice, so where to stay in Zell am See is where the card decision is made, before you book.

The Hike & Swim Ticket: six days of lifts and lidos

For guests whose hotel is not a Summer Card partner, the tourism board offers the Hike & Swim Ticket, aimed at people who plan both mountain and water days. In 2026 it is valid from 14 May to 1 November, comes as a six consecutive days ticket, and costs €146 for adults, €109.50 for youths born 2008 to 2010 and €73 for children born 2011 to 2020. Proof of age is needed for youth and child prices.

It includes unlimited rides on all the cable cars in the region, which means the Kitzsteinhorn without ski lifts, the Maiskogel in Kaprun and the Schmittenhöhe in Zell am See, plus admission to the three lidos on Lake Zell (in the town center, at Thumersbach and at Schüttdorf-Seespitz) and the indoor pool in Zell am See. It also earns discounts on the panorama tour aboard the MS Schmittenhöhe, the Kaprun high mountain reservoirs, the Grossglockner High Alpine Road and a vehicle museum in Kaprun. It can be bought at the tourist offices in Zell am See and Kaprun and at the Kitzsteinhorn, Maiskogel and Schmittenhöhe cable cars.

A family bonus applies: parents and the two eldest children or youths pay the standard price, and any other children or youths travel free. Children born in 2021 or later travel free when accompanied by an adult.

Is it worth it? The test is simple. Write down every paid lift, boat and pool you plan to use over the six days, check each single-ticket price on its operator's page, and compare the total with €146 per adult. Three or four lift days plus a few lido visits tend to favor the ticket, while one lift day and a beach towel do not. Because the ticket runs six consecutive days, a hiking-heavy week with a rest day built in uses it less efficiently than a compact plan.

The SalzburgerLand Card: the whole state

The SalzburgerLand Card is a different kind of product. Instead of covering one valley, it covers attractions across the federal state of Salzburg: museums, spas, show mines, lakes, castles and mountain railways. For 2026 the season runs from 1 May to 1 November, and the card comes in two lengths. Six days cost €103 for adults and €52 for children aged 4 to 15, and twelve days cost €129 for adults and €65 for children. A family bonus makes the card free for the third child or more in one family. The card's own site speaks of about 180 attractions, while the Zell am See site rounds that to about 190, so check the current attraction list.

Two features set it apart. First, it offers a choice between free travel on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road and a 24-hour Salzburg Card for the city of Salzburg. For a driver, the road option is the one to understand, so read Hohe Tauern National Park for the road's own tolls and hours, and check how the card benefit applies to your vehicle. Second, the card activates at the first scan at an attraction, not on the day of purchase, so it can be bought ahead.

Within Zell am See-Kaprun, the list of included services on the tourism site names the indoor pool, the Kaprun Museum, the Pinzgau local railway, the Sigmund Thun Gorge, the three lidos, Vötter's vehicle museum and the Vogtturm Museum. The Schmittenhöhe and Kitzsteinhorn lifts are not named in that list, so a lift-focused stay should confirm them on the card's attraction list before buying. That is why the card is the right tool for a trip that also visits Salzburg, the lakes and the Hohe Tauern, and the wrong tool for a stay that is mostly about lifts around the lake.

What every guest gets: the Guest Mobility Ticket and Guest Card

Overnight guests receive two cards without paying for them separately. The Guest Mobility Ticket covers public transport across the federal state of Salzburg all year round, from trains and the Postbus to the local railway. It is tied to the mobility tax of €0.50 per person per night for guests aged 15 and over, which rises to €1.10 from 1 May 2027. It is the card that makes a day trip to Salzburg city cheaper, and it is the one to use even if you never touch another card.

The Guest Card gives discounts at numerous experiences throughout the year, except at Summer Card partner accommodations between 15 May and 31 October, when the Summer Card takes its place. Neither card is a substitute for the Hike & Swim Ticket, because they do not unlock the lifts for free.

Which card for which trip

For a three-night summer stay in a partner hotel, the Summer Card is the whole answer. Arrive after 3 p.m. in July or August, plan the Schmittenhöhe and Kitzsteinhorn for days two and three, and keep the lake for the afternoon. For the same stay in a non-partner hotel, the Hike & Swim Ticket is rarely the right buy on its own: six days of value in three nights is a poor match, so price single lift tickets and lido entries instead.

For a five-night lift-and-lake week in a non-partner hotel, the Hike & Swim Ticket starts to make sense, particularly if the plan includes the Kitzsteinhorn, the Schmittenhöhe and the Maiskogel with children. For a week that splits between Zell am See, Salzburg and a lake such as the Wolfgangsee, the SalzburgerLand Card is worth checking against the attractions on your list, and the Guest Mobility Ticket carries the rail and bus costs.

For a family with two young children, the Hike & Swim family bonus and the free travel for children born in 2021 or later change the arithmetic, so compare the family total, not the adult price. For a rainy-day plan, the indoor pool and the museums matter more than the lifts, and the Summer Card and the SalzburgerLand Card both include them. A wider guide to deciding on passes is are city passes worth it.

When no card is the right answer

A card pays when you use it often. One lift day, a lido afternoon and a free walk around the lake cost less as single tickets than as a six-day pass, and a stay built around hiking from the doorstep needs no lifts at all. Outside the card seasons, before mid-May and after October, none of the summer cards is valid, so single tickets are the option.

Winter is a separate story. The summer cards end on 31 October and 1 November, and the region sells ski passes and other products instead.

Mistakes to avoid

Assuming the Summer Card can be bought at the tourist office is the first one; it cannot. Buying a six-day Hike & Swim Ticket for a three-day stay is the second. Reading a card's headline list as proof that a specific lift is included is the third; confirm the exact attraction on the official list. Forgetting the 3 p.m. rule on arrival day and the day-two rule for four attractions is the fourth. The last is buying a card for a day when low cloud and rain make the summit pointless, so keep a flexible day in the plan and check the lift status the evening before.

How to buy and what to bring

The Hike & Swim Ticket is sold at the Zell am See and Kaprun tourist offices and at the Kitzsteinhorn, Maiskogel and Schmittenhöhe cable cars. The SalzburgerLand Card can be bought online or at the tourist offices in Zell am See and Kaprun. Bring photo identification for youth and child prices. A digital card sits on your phone, so an eSIM for Austria avoids roaming trouble at the lift gate. Travel insurance is the safety net if a mountain day is cancelled or goes wrong, and tourist taxes in Europe explains the nightly charges that hotels add. When the card is settled, Zell am See in 3 days turns it into a route.

Domande frequenti

Can you buy the Zell am See Summer Card?

No. The tourism site states that the Summer Card cannot be purchased and is issued only to guests of partner accommodations, between 15 May and 31 October. If your hotel is not a partner, the Hike & Swim Ticket is the card to price.

How much is the Hike & Swim Ticket in Zell am See?

In 2026 it costs €146 for adults, €109.50 for youths born 2008 to 2010 and €73 for children born 2011 to 2020, valid for six consecutive days from 14 May to 1 November. It covers the cable cars (without ski lifts) and the three lidos.

Is the SalzburgerLand Card worth it for a Zell am See trip?

Only if you also plan attractions across the state. The 2026 card costs €103 for six days or €129 for twelve for adults, and includes a choice of free travel on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road or a 24-hour Salzburg Card.

What is the Guest Mobility Ticket?

Overnight guests in Zell am See-Kaprun receive it all year round. It covers public transport across the federal state of Salzburg, and the tourism site ties it to a mobility tax of €0.50 per person per night.

Which card is best for a family?

The Hike & Swim Ticket has a family bonus: parents and the two eldest children or youths pay the standard price and other children travel free, and children born in 2021 or later travel free with an adult. A Summer Card hotel stay avoids the question.
