Basilica Mary Rotunda

Basilica Mary Rotunda, also known as the Dominican Church, is a Baroque church at Postgasse 4 in Vienna’s old university quarter.

Basilica Mary Rotunda, also known as the Dominican Church, is a Baroque church at Postgasse 4 in Vienna’s old university quarter. Its restrained exterior gives little hint of the bright, richly decorated interior: look up to the frescoes and stucco work, and take time to notice the paintings, sculptures and carved details. The Dominican order’s history in Vienna reaches back to the 1220s, though the church now standing here was built in the 17th century. It is a calm stop for church architecture and a quiet pause in the city centre.

A Dominican site since the 13th century

The Dominican presence in Vienna began in the 1220s, in the area beside the old university quarter. Preaching, study and worship shared this part of the city. The church on Postgasse today is not the first building to serve the order here.

A Gothic predecessor stood on the site before the current Baroque church. After the 1529 siege of Vienna, parts of its choir and nave were dismantled for the city’s fortifications. The medieval church was therefore partly lost before the present building was planned.

Ferdinand II laid the foundation stone for the replacement church in 1631. Giovanni Giacomo Tencalla designed it, and builders Spazzi, Biasino and Canevale, from Lanzo d’Intelvi, worked on the new structure. The result is a 17th-century Baroque church whose richly decorated interior contrasts with its more discreet exterior.

The interior includes frescoes in the nave, along with paintings, sculptures, carvings and stucco decorations. Allow time to look across the walls and ceiling rather than focusing only on the main view from the entrance.

From convent church to parish church

Joseph II later made the church a parish church as well as a convent church. The Dominican order continued to inhabit the Baroque building that had replaced its medieval predecessor. In 1927, the church was raised to the status of a minor basilica.
