Freshwater Beach

Freshwater Beach, or “Freshie”, is a sheltered 350-metre beach north of Manly in Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

Freshwater Beach, or “Freshie”, is a sheltered 350-metre beach north of Manly in Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Its headlands help create consistent surf, and the gentler waves can suit beginners, though swimming conditions can be hazardous when waves and rips are present. Freshwater has a special place in Australian surfing history: Duke Kahanamoku demonstrated surfboard riding here in 1914, and a life-size statue of him stands on the northern headland. Walk the shore and rocks to the 50-metre ocean pool, or take in the bay from Freshwater Lookout.

Freshwater and Australian surfing history

Freshwater Beach

Freshwater Beach is closely tied to the introduction of surfing to Australian audiences. Hawaiian surfer Duke Kahanamoku demonstrated surfboard riding here in 1914. The beach is also described as the place where he helped popularise the sport in 1915. A life-size statue of Kahanamoku stands on the northern headland, a landmark to look for as you explore the shore.

Surf, sand and swimming

Headlands frame this 350-metre beach and help shelter it from strong northerly winds. The surf is often consistent, and the gentler waves can make Freshwater a good place for beginner surfers. Conditions are different for swimmers: waves and rips can make swimming hazardous, so check the water before you go in.

Freshwater is part of the Manly-Freshwater World Surfing Reserve, recognised for the historical, cultural and environmental values of its surfing beaches. If you would rather swim laps than surf, the eight-lane, 50-metre ocean pool sits on a rocky platform beneath the northern headland. Lane markings and shorter distance markers are painted on the pool sides.

Walking around the headlands

Walk along the beach and over the rocks to reach the ocean pool and the lookout above it. The clifftop trail linking North Curl Curl and Dee Why is another option for a longer coastal walk. Freshwater is just north of Manly, and the Manly Wormhole tunnel passes through the headland between Queenscliff and Freshwater.

Parking and a quieter visit

There is paid parking at the beach, as well as free street parking around 600 to 700 metres away. If you want a quieter stretch of sand, choose an early morning or a weekday. Bring time for the shoreline, the northern headland and the pool rather than treating Freshwater as only a quick surf stop.
