Fort Denison

Fort Denison stands on a small island in the middle of Sydney Harbour, northeast of the Royal Botanic Gardens.

Fort Denison stands on a small island in the middle of Sydney Harbour, northeast of the Royal Botanic Gardens. Known as Pinchgut Island, it was first used to confine convicts and later became a defensive fort. A guided visit brings its penal and military history into focus, with harbour views from the island. Ferries pass the fort on routes from Circular Quay, so you can also see it from the water. Check access before setting out, as the site has been closed for renovation.

From Pinchgut Island to a defensive fort

Fort Denison
Fort Denison

The island now called Fort Denison was known as Pinchgut and by the Eora names Mat-te-wan-ye and Muddawahnyuh. Before the fort was built, it was a steep, rocky place in Sydney Harbour and a fishing location for local Aboriginal people.

During the colonial period, convicts who committed further offences were sent to the island and confined in leg irons with bread and water. The name Pinchgut is linked to these meagre rations. The island also had a gibbet, where the remains of an executed convict were displayed as a warning. The fort was built later as a defensive facility. The site is now part of Sydney Harbour National Park and is heritage-listed.

Guided tours cover the fort’s history, including its years as a colonial prison and a military site. The lunchtime cannon firing is another point of interest when it is taking place.
