Torre Monumental is a clock tower in Buenos Aires’s Retiro district, beside Retiro train station and Plaza San Martín. Built as a gift from the British community for the 1910 centenary of the May Revolution, it combines Palladian design with British emblems and a working clock. Take the elevator to the upper viewing area for broad views over the city and nearby railway buildings. The tower was once called Torre de los Ingleses; its name changed after the 1982 Falklands War.

A centenary gift in Retiro

Torre Monumental

Torre Monumental was built for the centenary of the May Revolution of 1810, which began Argentina’s break from Spanish rule. The city’s British community presented the tower as a gift, and it was inaugurated in 1916 in the Retiro district, beside the train station.

Its first name was Torre de los Ingleses, or Tower of the English. After the 1982 Falklands War, it was renamed Torre Monumental. The earlier name remains in use, so you may see both names when looking for the landmark.

Palladian design and British emblems

The tower follows the Palladian style, a form of neoclassical architecture. Its red brick and pale stone details give the exterior a strong contrast, while the upper sections include decorative elements such as triglyphs and metopes. A bronze dome crowns the structure, and the clock remains functional.

Look for British symbols incorporated into the decoration. These include the Tudor Rose, also known as the English Rose, as well as references to Scotland, Wales and Ireland. The materials used in the construction included Portland stone and red brick imported from England.

The upper viewing area

An elevator carries visitors to the viewing area near the top. From there, the view takes in the surrounding Retiro area, including the railway buildings. The upper level has a balcony, and the city panorama gives you a different perspective from the streets and park around the tower.

The monument stands in Plaza Fuerza Aérea Argentina, formerly Plaza Británica, across from Retiro train station. Plaza San Martín is also nearby, so the tower can be paired with time in the surrounding area. For a closer look at the architecture, pause outside to take in the brickwork, clock and emblems before going up.
