Thinkery is Austin’s hands-on children’s museum in the Mueller neighborhood, with indoor and outdoor activities that turn science, art and movement into play. Children can experiment with water in Currents, explore light and shadows in the Light Lab, and make or test creations in the Innovators’ Workshop and Spark Shop. Hands-on exhibits for curious kids

Thinkery is a children’s museum in Austin’s Mueller neighborhood, built around learning through play. Its exhibits bring science, technology, engineering, art and math into activities children can touch, test and change. The museum is designed for young children, with activities that can engage a range of ages, including babies and children up to about 11.

At the Light Lab, children can experiment with light and shadows, draw with light and build with LED structures. Other activities mix art and making, including painting on glass and stop-motion animation. In the Spark Shop, children can make and launch flying objects. These spaces invite experimentation, so a visit is more about trying things than moving quietly from display to display.

Water, movement and pretend play

Currents gives children a chance to explore how water moves and sounds. They can play with the flow, build dams and waterfalls, and test how water sounds against different materials. The activity is hands-on, so bring spare clothes if water play is part of your plan.

Other areas cover movement, problem-solving and imaginative play. Children can explore forces in the Notion of Motion exhibit, make things in the Innovators’ Workshop, or spend time in pretend farm and kitchen spaces. The museum also has a Story Nook for books and story time. The mix gives children several ways to take part, whether they want to build, move, read or play make-believe.

Make time for the outdoor area

The outdoor play space adds climbing and active play to the indoor exhibits. It includes a large climbing structure and water features, so children can switch from experiments inside to physical play outside. Leave room in your schedule for both, especially if your child gets absorbed in the water activities.

Thinkery can be a useful indoor stop when Austin’s heat, humidity or storms make outdoor plans less comfortable. Those conditions can also draw more families and school groups, so expect a busier visit at those times. The museum is at 1830 Simond Ave. Check its current ticket information before you go; advance tickets are recommended.
