Yellowstone National Park spans more than two million acres across Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, with geyser basins, hot springs, canyons, waterfalls and broad valleys. Its geothermal sights include Old Faithful and the vividly colored Grand Prismatic Spring; the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone brings steep cliffs and waterfalls into the mix. Wildlife such as bison, elk and bears lives across the park. Because the distances between regions add up, plan a route and explore one area at a time instead of trying to cover everything in a day.

A park shaped by geothermal activity

Yellowstone sits above an active volcanic system. Heat beneath the ground drives its geysers, hot springs, mud pots and steam vents, while the park’s cliffs, valleys and waterfalls have also been shaped by volcanic activity, earthquakes, ice and water. The result is a landscape where steaming ground and vividly colored pools appear alongside forests, rivers and open valleys.

Established in 1872, Yellowstone was the world’s first national park. It covers more than two million acres and extends into Wyoming, Montana and Idaho. The scale matters when planning: the major sights are spread across different regions, and driving between stops can take a substantial part of your day.

Old Faithful is one of the park’s best-known geysers. The Grand Prismatic Spring is another major stop, known for its intense colors. Keep to the boardwalks around thermal areas: the water and ground can be dangerously hot, even where the surface looks solid. Walking these routes lets you view the features without stepping into fragile or hazardous ground.

Mammoth Hot Springs has terraces formed by mineral deposits. For a change of scenery, head to the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, where steep cliffs frame waterfalls. Artist Point and Inspiration Point are among the scenic viewpoints in the park. If you want to see several kinds of geothermal features, plan time for more than one basin rather than treating Old Faithful as the whole visit.

Wildlife and planning your route

Bison, elk, bears and other wild animals inhabit Yellowstone. Lamar Valley is one place to watch for wildlife, and the drive through the valley is a draw in its own right. Animals can appear beside roads, so drive carefully and allow them space; a bison on the road can bring traffic to a halt. These are wild animals in their natural habitat, not animals to approach or feed.

Give the park several days if your schedule allows. One day covers only a small part of Yellowstone, while three or four days leave more room to explore separate regions. May through early October is the main period for a broad range of activities, though some facilities close in the off-season. October may bring a quieter visit. Pack food and drinks, check your route in advance and do not rely on having mobile service throughout the park.
