Blacktail Ponds is a wetland overlook in Grand Teton National Park, near the Antelope Flats Road turnoff and Mormon Row. From the roadside pullout, you can look across the ponds and marshy ground to the Teton range. Sunrise brings soft light and a chance to see elk, moose or birds; the quieter setting also suits a pause away from busier viewpoints. Bring binoculars or a zoom lens, and stay at the overlook if the steep path down through the willows is not for you.

The overlook and wetlands

Blacktail Ponds is a wetland area in Grand Teton National Park, near the Antelope Flats Road turnoff and Mormon Row. The name refers to several connected sections of water, with narrow channels between them. The ponds sit in low, marshy ground west of Blacktail Deer Creek.

A roadside pullout gives you a view across the wetlands toward the Tetons. The mix of water, meadow and mountain makes this a useful stop for landscape photography, especially when the peaks catch the early light. The spot is often quieter than better-known viewpoints in the park.

Wildlife and walking

Elk, moose and birds are among the wildlife associated with the area. Look across the wet ground and surrounding vegetation, and bring binoculars or a zoom lens so you can watch from a distance. Early morning is a good time to visit for light and possible wildlife activity.

A steep trail descends from the parking area through tall grasses and willows. The overlook itself gives you a view without taking that path. If you continue exploring the wetlands, keep wildlife at a respectful distance and avoid disturbing animals.
