The Valletta Waterfront is a promenade along the Grand Harbour, where restored 18th-century warehouses now house restaurants, bars and shops. The honey-coloured buildings have brightly painted doors, and the harbour views take in traditional boats, cruise ships and the Three Cities. Walk the length of the waterfront, pause for a drink or meal, or use the glass lift to reach the upper part of Valletta. Cruise arrivals add activity to the promenade, though it remains a pleasant place to spend time by the water.

The buildings along the waterfront began as storehouses for maritime trade. Grand Master Manuel Pinto de Fonseca ordered the warehouses built in 1752. Their painted doors marked the goods once kept inside: blue for fish, yellow for wheat, red for wine and green for agricultural products.

The warehouses were badly damaged during the Second World War, in part because of their proximity to the Malta Shipyard. Restored since then, they now house restaurants, bars and shops. The complex includes Pinto Stores, the Forni Shopping Complex and the Church of the Flight into Egypt.

A promenade beside the Grand Harbour

The waterfront remains a working port and a point of arrival for cruise ships and ferries. From the pedestrian promenade, you can watch vessels at berth and look across the Grand Harbour towards the Three Cities. Traditional boats add another detail to the harbour scene.

The promenade is an easy place to pause before heading into Valletta. A glass lift connects the waterfront with the upper town, and the city centre is also within walking distance. The route uphill includes stairs, so comfortable shoes are useful if you plan to explore on foot.

Eating and spending time by the water

Restaurants and bars occupy the old port buildings, with tables looking out over the harbour. The setting suits a relaxed meal or drink, and the waterside restaurants provide a place to sit and watch ships come and go. Shops are also part of the complex.

Cruise arrivals bring more activity to the promenade, while the waterfront can still feel calm beside the busier parts of the city. For a longer visit, combine a walk along the harbour with a meal, then take the lift up to explore Valletta.
