At Azabudai Hills in Minato City, teamLab Borderless is a digital art museum where light, sound, colour and scent shift as you move through the rooms. There is no fixed route: images flow between spaces, so a room can look different when you return a few minutes later. Look out for the cosmic, lotus, bubble and aquatic rooms, and try the interactive works, including a wall that responds to touch. A tea experience adds another visual effect, with digital branches appearing around your cup.

A museum without a set route

teamLab Borderless reopened at Azabudai Hills in 2024, after moving from its former location in Odaiba. The museum is dedicated to digital art by the teamLab collective. Instead of viewing works one by one along a prescribed route, you move through connected spaces and discover installations as you go.

Light, sound, colour and scent shape the rooms. Some images travel beyond the space where they first appear, merging with works elsewhere. The result is a display that changes with the movement of people and with time. Returning to a room a few minutes later can bring a different scene, so it is worth lingering or retracing your steps rather than trying to see everything in a fixed order.

The low lighting is part of the experience, but it can make it harder to find your way. Staff are positioned around the exhibition and can help you locate rooms. If you plan to use any relevant apps, download them before entering.

Rooms to look for

The cosmic, lotus, bubble and aquatic rooms are among the spaces visitors often seek out. Each offers a different setting for the shifting projections, and no single room tells the whole story of the museum. Images can appear to cross the boundaries between spaces, so a change of direction may lead to a scene you did not see earlier.

Interaction is built into some of the works. In the expansive main room, try touching the wall and watch how the projection responds. Another activity lets you draw a sea creature and see it join the digital environment. These works are a natural fit for families, though children and adults alike should take care in the dark and around glass floors.

Tea and practical details

The tea experience extends the art beyond the gallery rooms. Place your cup and digital branches appear around it, turning the serving into part of the visual scene. It is a quieter way to engage with the exhibition than moving from installation to installation.

Timed entry is recommended, and once inside you can stay for as long as you like. Set aside two to three hours, especially if you want time to revisit rooms. Free lockers are available; keep your phone and water with you and store other belongings you will not need. Selfie sticks are not permitted. Popular photo spots may be crowded, so visit outside peak hours if you can, and go to a particular room early if it matters to you. The moving visuals can feel disorienting after a while, so pause for a break when needed.
