Hirakawa-mon Gate stands at the northern side of the Imperial Palace East Gardens in Chiyoda, Tokyo. Built as an entrance to Edo Castle, it combines heavy wooden doors, iron fittings and thick stone walls with a bridge over the moat. Its fortified layout gives a close look at how castle gates controlled entry, while its association with the shogun’s household adds another layer to its history. Admission is free, and Takebashi Station is about a five-minute walk away.
A gate built to control entry

Hirakawa-mon was an entrance to Edo Castle, the former castle on the grounds of today’s Imperial Palace. Its fortified design includes thick walls and a small enclosed space between gates set at right angles. This layout made visitors pass through a confined courtyard, where defenders on the surrounding walls could monitor movement.
The gate is associated with the shogun’s household. It was also known as Onna-mon, or the Women’s Gate, because women from the Ōoku, the shogun’s inner quarters, used it when they left the compound. The name Hirakawa refers to the nearby moat.
Look closely at the bridge and fittings

The approach crosses a wooden bridge over the moat. The gate and bridge have been reconstructed, and the gate was restored after damage during the Second World War. Its heavy doors, metal studs and stone blocks make the defensive purpose of the structure visible at close range. Green ornaments on the bridge railings and gate structures provide a finer detail to look for among the substantial timber and masonry.
A major fire at Edo Castle in 1657 brought tragedy to the gate: people died while trying to escape through it. A small memorial nearby commemorates the event. Take a moment there as part of a visit, and treat the site with the respect due to a place connected to loss.
