Kamakura Kokuhoukan Museum

Kamakura Kokuhoukan Museum is a history and art museum inside the grounds of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine in Kamakura.

Kamakura Kokuhoukan Museum is a history and art museum inside the grounds of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine in Kamakura. Opened in 1928, it holds objects donated by local shrines and temples, including Buddhist sculptures, paintings, documents and bronze vessels. The wooden devotional and portrait sculptures are a particular draw, and an audio guide with text that can be translated helps explain the collection. Temporary displays, such as an exhibition of Japanese dolls, add another reason to visit. Allow time for the shrine precincts around it too.

Kamakura Kokuhoukan Museum opened in 1928 to house important objects connected with local shrines and temples. It stands along the eastern side of the Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine precincts, so the museum can fit naturally into a visit to the shrine grounds.

The collection includes objects donated by nearby religious institutions. Carvings, paintings and old documents sit alongside sculptures and bronze vessels. The museum building is also a registered tangible cultural property in Japan.

The collection is particularly noted for wooden devotional and portrait sculptures from the Kamakura and Muromachi periods. These works give the visit its strongest focus; bronze pots and bells provide a different view of the objects preserved here.

An audio guide includes text that can be translated, which is useful because some exhibits have limited English explanation. Temporary exhibitions bring in other subjects, including Japanese dolls. Photography is prohibited inside, so plan to view the objects in person rather than record them.
