Okochi Sanso Garden is the former Arashiyama estate of Japanese film actor Denjirō Ōkōchi, set on a hillside above Kyoto. Paths wind through carefully tended gardens, past traditional buildings and a Shinto shrine, to viewpoints across the city and surrounding mountains. Okochi Sanso was the home of Denjirō Ōkōchi, a Japanese actor known for period films. He created the villa and garden in Saga, in Kyoto’s Arashiyama district, over a period of about 30 years. The estate opened to the public after his death in 1962.

The property brings together traditional buildings and landscaped grounds on a hillside. Its paths pass through garden scenery and connect different parts of the estate, including a teahouse and a Shinto shrine. Several of the structures are nationally registered tangible cultural properties.

A walk through the grounds takes you past a range of garden settings, including mossy banks and maple trees. The route climbs to viewpoints looking across Kyoto and toward the surrounding mountains. Views of Mount Hiei and the Hozukyo Gorge are among the sights associated with the estate. A lookout point also looks over Arashiyama.

The villa’s buildings include a main house and teahouse, as well as halls such as Myōkō-an and Jibutsu-dō. There is also a museum connected with Ōkōchi. Follow the paths around the grounds to see more than the first viewpoint; the landscape and structures are spread across the estate.

A quiet stop near the bamboo grove

The garden is close to the Arashiyama bamboo path, making it a natural addition to a walk through the area. The bamboo grove route runs toward Okochi Sanso from Nomiya Shrine, passing the north gate of Tenryu-ji. The garden provides a change of pace from that popular route, with resting places along its one-way path.

At the end of the visit, use the ticket given at entry to collect the included matcha and sweet at the teahouse. The tea stop gives you time to pause after walking the hillside grounds. Keep noise low while exploring, in keeping with the peaceful setting.
