Phimeanakas is a three-tiered Hindu temple inside the former Royal Palace compound of Angkor Thom, Siem Reap. Built in the late 10th century, its laterite-and-sandstone pyramid is a quieter stop among Angkor Thom’s larger temples. Walk around the tiers and stone corridors to take in the structure and its setting among trees. The temple once stood within the royal enclosure, where the Khmer king and royal family lived. The stairs to the top are closed, so plan to admire the pyramid from below.

Phimeanakas stands within the former Royal Palace compound in Angkor Thom. The Hindu temple dates to the late 10th century and is associated with the reign of Rajendravarman. Its name means “Celestial Palace.” The temple was part of the royal enclosure, where the king and royal family lived.

The palace itself has largely disappeared. Part of its perimeter wall and the Phimeanakas pyramid remain, giving visitors a sense of the compound’s scale and layout. The temple is also close to Baphuon, making it easy to include both in a walk through Angkor Thom.

The temple has three tiers built of laterite and sandstone. Its present appearance is simpler than that of Angkor’s more elaborately carved monuments, but the stepped form and stone construction are worth examining as you walk around the base.

The stairway to the top is closed, so visitors cannot climb the pyramid. Take time to view it from ground level and respect access restrictions intended to protect the structure.
