Preah Ko Temple

Preah Ko was built in 879 by King Indravarman I, in Hariharalaya, an early Khmer capital. The temple was dedicated to Shiva and to the king’s ancestors. Its name means “Sacred Bull,” referring to Nandi, Shiva’s mount.

The sanctuary is part of the Roluos group, a collection of early temples near Siem Reap. Preah Ko belongs to the beginnings of Khmer temple architecture in this area, before later Angkor monuments were built. Its smaller scale makes the layout easier to take in on foot.

Six towers and their carved details

The temple’s six brick towers sit on a raised platform in two rows, facing east. Take time to examine the surfaces rather than viewing the towers only from a distance. Carved lintels, sandstone details and stucco decoration give each structure its own patterns and character. Cambodian script appears on the doors.

Stone Nandi bulls stand in front of the sanctuaries, facing toward the towers. Guardian lion figures are also found at the site. Together, these details connect the temple’s layout and decoration to its dedication to Shiva.

Walking around the site

The grounds are compact, and a short visit is enough to walk around and inspect the towers. Steps and uneven surfaces are part of the route, so take care underfoot. Mature trees around the grounds provide shade.

Restoration work is under way on some of the brick towers. You can see repair activity during a visit, though the work does not change the basic route around the site. Preah Ko is often visited before Bakong, another nearby temple in the Roluos group. An early start gives you a better chance of exploring the grounds in a quieter setting.
