Morro da Conceição is a residential hill in Saúde, near Rio de Janeiro’s port, where Portuguese-style houses and tiled façades preserve traces of the city’s early history. Walk its streets to see historic buildings, a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Conception and artists’ studios. From the top, the city opens up below. The hill is also part of the African Heritage route, and a guided tour can add context to the area’s past.

A hill in the story of early Rio

Morro da Conceição was one of four hills that formed the early city’s central area, alongside Morro do Castelo, Morro de Santo Antônio and Morro de São Bento. Rio de Janeiro was founded in 1565, and the city grew around this group for three centuries. Unlike the other hills, which were later levelled or partly removed, Morro da Conceição remains a residential neighbourhood. Modern buildings around it partly screen the hill from view at street level.

Its name comes from a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Conception. Maria Dantas had the chapel built at the summit in 1590. She later gave it and the surrounding land to the Carmelite friars, who planned a convent there. The hill’s Portuguese-style houses, including façades decorated with tiles and Catholic saints, give the area a distinct architectural character.

The chapel, the episcopal palace and Valongo

The hill’s religious history continued in the seventeenth century. In 1659, French Capuchin monks began building a complex that became the Episcopal Palace decades later. The chapel and palace connect the streets and buildings here to the area’s early religious institutions.

The northwestern side of the hill has a second, lower summit. It was once known as Morro do Valongo, a name that remained in use until the early twentieth century. The Valongo Observatory was founded there in 1926. Defensive batteries on Morro da Conceição and Morro do Valongo were also built to protect the city.

Studios and the African Heritage route

Morro da Conceição is part of the African Heritage route, which gives visitors a way to explore local history alongside the neighbourhood’s streets and architecture. Guided tours, including routes combining the hill with the Monastery of São Bento or Pequena África, provide more historical context.

Artists live and work in the area. During events, some open their studios so visitors can see their workspaces and how they make their art. The hill also has restaurants and bars, adding places to pause during a walk. Its routes include stairs and steep slopes, so plan for an uphill visit on foot.
