Cais do Valongo is an archaeological site in Saúde, in Rio de Janeiro’s port area, where enslaved Africans were brought ashore. The stone wharf was built in 1811 and later buried; urban works uncovered it again in 2011. Today, its exposed cobblestones and on-site markers and graphics explain the port’s role in the Atlantic slave trade. This is a place for learning and remembrance, not a casual sightseeing stop. Approach the site quietly and leave time to read the information there.

A port uncovered

Cais do Valongo was built in 1811 as a landing place connected to the forced arrival of Africans in Brazil. The port became one of the key points in the Atlantic trade in enslaved people. The exposed remains now mark a place where people were brought to shore and then sold and traded.

The wharf did not remain visible throughout its history. In 1843, it was covered over as Rio prepared for the expected arrival of Teresa Maria, daughter of Francis I of the Two Sicilies. The site was later buried beneath layers of earth. Urban works brought it back to light in 2011.

Reading the remains

The archaeological remains include cobblestone steps leading down to the landing area. On-site markers and graphics give visitors information about the site and the history of slavery in Rio. Take time to read them alongside the physical remains; together, they explain why this stretch of the port matters.

Cais do Valongo is part of a wider area of African heritage in Rio’s port zone. Nearby historical places include Pedra do Sal and Valongo Garden. The wharf is protected as national heritage and is also part of a circuit of African archaeological heritage.

A place of remembrance

The site speaks to the scale and lasting consequences of the forced movement of people from Africa to Brazil. The wharf’s history also includes the continuation of trafficking after slavery was banned in 1831: ships later docked at night to avoid public attention. The landing place was eventually covered, and its earlier role was obscured until the archaeological remains were uncovered.

For many people, Cais do Valongo is both a historical site and a place to honour those who suffered under slavery. Guided visits can give further context; consider choosing a guide of African heritage if you want to explore the site’s cultural significance. Keep your visit attentive and respectful.
