Gasworks Creative Precinct

Gasworks Creative Precinct is an arts centre and park in Albert Park, on the former site of the South Melbourne Gas Plant. Its red-brick industrial buildings house galleries and theatres, while four hectares of parkland have sculptures and space to walk. Come for exhibitions, performances, workshops or community classes, or time your visit for the farmers market and open studios on the third Saturday of the month. Dogs are welcome in designated off-leash areas.

From gas plant to arts precinct

Gasworks occupies the former South Melbourne Gas Plant site in Albert Park. The industrial complex dates to the 1870s and its red-brick buildings now house arts spaces. The site lay unused from the 1950s before being adapted for cultural activity.

The precinct brings together three gallery spaces, two theatres, workshop rooms and a café, set within four hectares of parkland. Exhibitions, performances, festivals, markets and classes take place across the site. Check the Gasworks website for current programming, since shows and activities depend on the schedule.

Galleries, performances and parkland

The galleries present local artwork, while the theatres host performances and other events. Workshops and community classes include painting and sculpting. For a closer look at the artists working at Gasworks, guided tours can be booked; the listed tour price is $25 for adults and $15 for children.

Outside, sculptures are spread through the park. The grounds have shaded areas and designated off-leash space for dogs. On the third Saturday of each month, the precinct hosts a farmers market and open studios. A café with outdoor seating is also on site.
