A park shaped by Melbourne’s history

Kings Domain
Kings Domain

Kings Domain was established in 1854 and occupies parkland south of Melbourne’s CBD. Its grounds include the Shrine of Remembrance Reserve, Sidney Myer Music Bowl and the area south of the Royal Botanic Gardens. The park’s boundaries also encompass Government House.

The grounds are culturally significant to the people of the Eastern Kulin nation. Across the park, memorials and statues relate to the city’s history and to people who served in war. Among the named memorials are tributes to Sir Weary Dunlop and King George V, as well as the Pioneer Women’s Memorial Garden and an acknowledgement of Aboriginal heritage.

Walking paths, including the Tan, run through the Domain and connect different parts of the park. Large Australian and European trees, garden beds, open lawns and ponds shape the routes. Fern Gully is a leafy stop, while the Walker Fountain, grottos, pavilions and gates give you landmarks to look for as you walk.

The Shrine of Remembrance and Sidney Myer Music Bowl sit within the wider parkland. The Music Bowl is an outdoor performance venue used for summertime events. Nearby gardens and the Royal Botanic Gardens extend the walk; the Queen Victoria Gardens, for example, have a floral clock made with more than 7,000 flowers.

Government House is another point of interest, though access inside depends on open-house weekends. When it is open to visitors, its Dining Room and ballroom are among the interiors to see. The park is open around the clock, so you can choose a daytime stroll or an evening visit. An evening flag-lowering ceremony honours those who died in service.
