Truc Bach Lake

Trúc Bạch Lake is a compact, walkable lake in Hanoi’s Ba Đình district, separated from West Lake by Thanh Niên Street. A shaded path circles the water, with benches, outdoor exercise equipment and swan-shaped pedal boats along the way. Come for a quieter walk, then pause at a lakeside café or try ice cream nearby. The lake is also a good base for visiting temples across Thanh Niên Street, including Quan Thanh Temple. For sunset, look across the water toward the city skyline.

How the lake was formed

Trúc Bạch was once part of West Lake. In the 17th century, villagers built an embankment that divided the larger lake, creating a smaller body of water used for fishing. The narrow dike later became Thanh Niên Street, which now separates Trúc Bạch Lake from West Lake.

The road took its present wider form in 1957 and 1958. During Ho Chi Minh’s lifetime, Hanoi’s young people and students widened it following his suggestion. Today, crossing the street gives you access to the lake’s temples and to the larger West Lake area.

Walks, water and nearby temples

A path follows the lake’s edge beneath trees, with places to sit and outdoor exercise machines along the route. The circuit takes less than an hour at a strolling pace. Swan-shaped pedal boats are another way to spend time on the water; nearby temples and pagodas offer a reason to continue exploring beyond the shoreline.

Cross Thanh Niên Street to reach nearby religious sites, including Quan Thanh Temple. The area also has coffee shops and restaurants, so you can take a break by the water before or after a walk. At sunset, the lake looks toward the city skyline, while early morning is a quieter time to come.
