Kurz gesagt

Stay near Formosa Boulevard station for a first visit, because the Red and Orange lines cross there and most sights are one or two rides away. Choose the main station for early trains and the night market, Hamasen and Pier-2 for waterfront evenings, and Zuoying only for a short stay beside the high-speed trains.

How to choose a base in Kaohsiung

Kaohsiung is a long, flat port city, and the easiest way to choose a base is by train lines. The Kaohsiung travel guide covers what to see, and this page settles where to sleep as part of a wider Taiwan trip. For most first visits the answer is a hotel near Formosa Boulevard station, with Hamasen as the better pick for a slow waterfront stay.

Three questions decide it. How do you arrive? The Taiwan High Speed Rail station at Zuoying, the Taiwan Railways station at Kaohsiung Main Station and the airport are all on the MRT Red Line, according to the Kaohsiung Rapid Transit Corporation, so the city is simple to enter from any direction. How many nights do you have? Two nights favor a central hotel and a day on trains and sights. And what is the evening for? A night market sits near the main station, while the harbor and Sizihwan Bay pull travelers toward the west.

The transit facts here come from the KRTC English site. The Red Line runs from Siaogang through Kaohsiung International Airport (R4), Kaohsiung Main Station (R11) and Zuoying (R16) toward Gangshan. The Orange Line runs from Hamasen (O1) through Formosa Boulevard, which is listed as R10/O5 because it is the interchange, toward Fongshan and Daliao. A light rail line, with stops numbered C1 onward, circles the waterfront past Love Pier, the two Pier-2 stops and Hamasen.

Price bands below are per night for a double room: $ is a simple business hotel or guesthouse, $$ a mid-range hotel, $$$ an upscale property. They are rough guides, not quotes. Check the final price and the cancellation terms when you book.

Formosa Boulevard is the base that makes every other plan easier. According to the KRTC map, station R10/O5 is the interchange between the Red Line and the Orange Line, so it is one ride from Kaohsiung Main Station and from the airport on one line, and one ride from Hamasen on the other. Zuoying, the stop for high-speed rail, is on the Red Line too, five stops beyond the main station.

That makes it the least risky choice for a first visit. You can change your plans mid-trip without changing hotels, whether that means a late start to the waterfront, an early train from the main station or a night market on the way back. The Kaohsiung in 2 days route is built so a hotel here works for both days.

The cost is atmosphere. The streets around an interchange are busy, and rooms facing a main road can be loud, so ask for an upper floor or an inner side when you book. If you want quiet evenings and water views, Hamasen is the better choice, and if you only need a bed beside the fast trains, Zuoying is simpler.

Nicht geeignet, wenn you want a quiet waterfront evening. Hamasen and Pier-2 suit that better.

Handy if you want two metro lines nearby and are happy to ride to most sights.

2. Kaohsiung Main Station

The area around Kaohsiung Main Station suits travelers whose trip depends on Taiwan Railways, and anyone who wants a night market within walking distance. The station is R11 on the Red Line, so the MRT is at the door. The Taiwan Tourism Administration describes Liuhe Night Market as a walk of about ten minutes from Kaohsiung Railway Station along Zhongshan Road, then a right turn onto Liuhe Road, with 138 stalls, steak houses and snack stalls. In the daytime it is an ordinary street, and it becomes a market at night.

Business hotels and simple guesthouses cluster near stations, and prices tend to be gentler than on the waterfront. The streets are not the most scenic, and the area feels like a transport hub, which is the point: you trade charm for convenience on arrival and departure days. If you plan an early train south or north, this is the base with the shortest walk to the platform.

It also works for travelers who plan to use Kaohsiung as a base for day trips. Kaohsiung or Tainan explains how the rail link to Tainan fits a day, and a main-station hotel makes the first train easy.

Nicht geeignet, wenn atmosphere matters more than convenience. Hamasen and Pier-2 have far more to look at.

3. Hamasen and Pier-2

Best for
Waterfront, couples
Station
O1 Hamasen, light rail C12 to C14

Orange to Red Line, R4

Hamasen and Pier-2 is the base for travelers who want the harbor. The Orange Line begins at Hamasen (O1), and the light rail stops at Dayi Pier-2 (C12), Penglai Pier-2 (C13) and Hamasen (C14), with Love Pier (C11) and Shoushan Park (C15) either side. That puts the waterfront promenade on foot, and Shoushan hill and Sizihwan Bay close by.

The Taiwan Tourism Administration describes Shoushan as a coral-reef hill in the southwest of the city with a park, a zoo and limestone caves, and Sizihwan Bay as a swimming beach with a long breakwater, a seaside park and sunsets it calls unparalleled. National Sun Yat-sen University sits within the bay area. For a plan built around these, see Kaohsiung in 2 days, which puts Hamasen on day one.

The trade-off is distance from the rail stations. From Hamasen you take the Orange Line to Formosa Boulevard and change to the Red Line to reach the airport, the main station or Zuoying. That is easy in daylight, but it adds a step on arrival and departure days, so this base suits travelers who are not rushing for a train.

Nicht geeignet, wenn you arrive late by high-speed rail. A base on the Red Line saves a transfer.

4. Zuoying and THSR

Best for
Short stays, fast trains
Station
R16, THSR Zuoying

Red Line, R16 to R4

$$

Zuoying is the base for travelers whose trip is built around the high-speed train. The THSR English site gives the station address as No. 105, Gaotie Rd., Zuoying District, and lists operating hours from 05:25 to 24:00, so a hotel nearby makes an early departure painless. The Red Line station, R16 Zuoying, takes you into the center, with Kaohsiung Main Station five stops away.

Staying here makes sense after a late arrival or before a morning train, especially if your next stop is up the west coast. THSR bookings open 29 days ahead, up to one hour before departure, per the THSR booking page, so you can lock the train before you pick the room.

The limit is that there is little to see on the doorstep, and the sights are a ride away. If you have time for a proper visit, one of the central bases is a better choice, and a single night here works best at the start or end of a stay.

Nicht geeignet, wenn you have time and want to be near the sights. Formosa Boulevard or Hamasen are better.

Quick picks by traveler type

First-timers with two nights: Formosa Boulevard. Travelers who plan early trains or a night market: the main station area. Couples and slow travelers: Hamasen and Pier-2. Anyone with a fast-train connection at either end: Zuoying for one night. Budget travelers should compare the main station area first, then Formosa Boulevard, and check the total price rather than the headline rate.

Choosing by length of stay

One night works best beside a station: Zuoying if you arrive or leave by fast train, the main station if you are using Taiwan Railways. Two nights suit Formosa Boulevard, with the waterfront as an evening ride. Three or more nights allow a change of base: two in the center, then a night at Hamasen if you want slow harbor evenings. If your plan includes Tainan or Kenting, read Kenting National Park and Tainan first, since either one changes where you need to be in the morning.

Getting around from any base

Whichever base you pick, the MRT and light rail do the work. The KRTC site separates tickets for the MRT, the light rail and travel passes, so decide on the first morning whether you will use single journeys or a pass. Foreign visitors with a Taiwan PASS can enter the Kaohsiung MRT and light rail by QR code in the pass app, according to the pass FAQ, which saves a stop at a ticket machine. The operator's customer service line is listed as +886-7-793-8888, with service hours from 07:00 to 23:00.

Buses and YouBike bicycles fill the gaps. The Tourism Administration's attraction pages list nearby bus stops and YouBike stations for sights such as Shoushan, so a hotel a few minutes from a station still works for places the lines do not reach.

Mistakes to avoid

The first is booking a Zuoying hotel for a stay of several nights. It is a transport base, and the center is a ride away. The second is choosing Hamasen without checking the transfer to your train, which adds a step on travel days. The third is assuming every hotel is next to an MRT station: check the distance to the nearest exit, since an easy walk in daylight can feel long after a flight. The fourth is booking in typhoon season on a non-refundable rate; GOV.UK says the season normally runs from May to November, with risk of road blockages and landslides after storms in central and southern Taiwan.

The last mistake is leaving the first night to chance after a long flight. Book it before you go.

Booking tips

Book earlier for Lunar New Year and long weekends, and keep dates flexible in typhoon season. Check whether the rate includes breakfast and what the cancellation window is. For entry, GOV.UK says UK passport holders need a passport valid for at least six months after arrival, which the six-month passport rule page explains in general terms.

Sort your phone before you land: the eSIM guide compares plans, which helps with MRT and light rail navigation. Travel insurance is worth having for delays and weather. Once your base is set, plan the days with Kaohsiung in 2 days, and for onward travel see getting around Taiwan.

Häufige Fragen

What is the best area to stay in Kaohsiung for first-timers?

Around Formosa Boulevard station, where the Red and Orange MRT lines cross (R10/O5). From there the main station, the airport line and the waterfront are one or two rides away. The trade-off is busy streets at night, so ask for an upper floor.

Is it better to stay near Kaohsiung Main Station or Zuoying?

The main station for sightseeing, since Liuhe Night Market is about ten minutes on foot and the Red Line is on the doorstep. Zuoying only if a high-speed train time rules your day. It has little on the doorstep, but the Red Line is quick to the center.

Where should couples stay in Kaohsiung?

Hamasen and the Pier-2 waterfront. The light rail stops along the harbor, Hamasen is also an Orange Line station, and Sizihwan Bay, praised for its sunsets, is close. The cost is a transfer or two to the airport and the main station.

Is Kaohsiung easy to get around without a car?

Yes. The Kaohsiung MRT has a Red Line and an Orange Line, and a light rail line runs along the waterfront. Together they reach the airport, both rail stations and the main sights, so a hotel next to a station is all you need.

When should I book hotels in Kaohsiung?

Book earlier for Lunar New Year and long weekends. Typhoon season normally runs from May to November, per GOV.UK, so choose a flexible rate in those months and check for weather updates before you travel.
