There is no single six-month rule. The US asks for six months beyond your stay unless your passport country is on CBP's exemption list. Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Egypt, India and China ask for about six months. The Schengen area asks for three months after you leave and a passport issued in the last ten years. The UK and Japan ask only for the length of your stay. Airlines check first. Rules read on 2 Oct 2026.
"Six months or you do not fly" is true for some destinations and false for others. Each country sets its own minimum passport validity, and the minimums run from the length of your stay to six months after you arrive. The check you meet first is the airline's, not the border officer's.
Every figure was read on 2 October 2026.
The rules now
Where a destination's own immigration page could be read, the table uses it. Where it could not, the table uses the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) entry requirements page for that country, which describes the rule for British passport holders. Other nationalities should check their own government's travel advice and the destination's portal, because the US rule in particular changes with the passport country.

The UK and Japan sit at the lenient end. The GOV.UK standard visitor page says the passport should be valid for the whole of your stay, and the FCDO's Japan page says the same for Japan with no additional period. Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam and China sit at the strict end: the FCDO pages for Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam and China all give an expiry date at least six months after arrival. Vietnam and China also ask for two blank pages.
Schengen: three months and ten years
The EU's Your Europe page for non-EU travelers sets two tests. The passport should be valid for at least three months after the date you intend to leave, and it must have been issued within the last ten years.
The two tests are separate. A passport with years left on it can still fail if it was issued more than ten years before you enter. The 90-day limit on how long you may stay is a different rule, covered in our Schengen 90/180 guide.
United States: six months, with a long exemption list
U.S. Customs and Border Protection publishes the rule in a bulletin for airlines. It states that visitors need a passport valid for six months beyond the period of their intended stay, and that citizens of the countries on its list need a passport valid only for the stay itself.
The bulletin says it replaces all earlier lists, and the CBP bulletin page shows an update date of 22 December 2025. For British travelers the UK government's US entry page says the passport must be valid for the length of the planned stay, which matches the list.
Türkiye, Thailand, Indonesia, Egypt, India
Türkiye counts from the end of the permitted stay.
The ministry's passport validity page is the source for both figures.
The sources are the FCDO's Thailand entry requirements and the embassy's visa exemption and visa on arrival page. They differ on blank pages, so keep two clear pages. For the rest of the Thai rules, see Thailand entry rules.
Indonesia's e-VOA information page states the six months. Our Bali entry guide covers the other steps.
The portal's FAQ gives the figure; the UK government's page for Egypt also asks for one blank page. Our Egypt visa guide covers fees and where to apply.
India words it differently. The official e-Visa page says the passport should have at least six months of validity at the time of applying and two blank pages for stamping. The FCDO's India page says six months after arrival. Plan for the stricter reading.
Country rule versus airline rule
The figures above are entry conditions set by the destination. The first check you meet is earlier, at check-in, and it is run by the airline.
IATA describes Timatic as a provider of real-time information on travel document requirements, and its Timatic page says Timatic AutoCheck automates travel document checks for airlines. On the US side, CBP's Carrier Liaison Program trains carrier staff to identify improperly documented travelers before they board, and the six-month list above is published for that audience.
Two things follow. The airline decides before any border officer sees you, so a passport that fails the airline's check means you do not fly, whatever the officer would have done. And neither page says a carrier must board a passenger who meets the published minimum. Treat the airline's reading as a second test, and ask the airline to confirm before you travel if your passport is close to a limit.
Connections add a layer. The FCDO's Canada entry page notes that countries you pass through may ask for more validity than your destination, often six months. Our guide to airport transit visas covers when a layover counts as entering a country at all.
Who is affected
Anyone whose passport expires less than a year after the trip should do the arithmetic before booking, and anyone going to several countries on one passport needs the longest requirement on the route, not the one for the main destination.
Take a traveler who leaves the Schengen area on 1 March 2027 and flies on to Bali, arriving 10 March. Schengen needs the passport to run past 1 June 2027. Indonesia needs it to run at least until 10 September 2027. A passport expiring on 1 July 2027 passes the first test and fails the second.
Holders of older passports have a separate problem in the Schengen area. The issue date matters as well as the expiry date, so a passport that has not expired can still be refused because it was issued more than ten years ago.
The US rule affects people by nationality. A citizen of a country on the CBP list needs the passport only for the stay. A citizen of a country that is not on the list, such as China or Vietnam, needs six months beyond it. Check the passport country, not the country you live in.
Vietnam adds a condition about the passport's physical state. The FCDO's Vietnam page asks for six months after arrival and two blank pages, and says British nationals have been refused entry and exit over a damaged passport. Confirm on Vietnam's official e-visa site, and see our Vietnam entry guide.
What to do before you book
List every country you will enter or change planes in, including airport changes between flights.
Read the official page for each one and note what the clock starts from. Schengen counts from the day you leave, Türkiye from the end of the permitted stay, India's e-Visa page from the application date, and Thailand, Indonesia and most of the rest from the day you arrive.
Convert each rule to a date and take the latest one. Compare it with the expiry date on your passport's data page.
If the passport falls short, renew it before you book flights. Renewal times are set by your own government, so check them first.
Check the issue date for Schengen, the number of blank pages for Thailand, Vietnam, India, China and Indonesia, and the condition of the passport.
Save the official page and the date you read it, and carry your onward ticket details. If the airline disagrees with the page, you have something to show.
What changed recently
The one dated change among these sources is the CBP bulletin of 18 December 2025, which replaces earlier lists, including the one in the 2022-2023 Carrier Information Guides. If you used an older list, recheck your passport country against it.
Türkiye's 60-day rule has applied since 1 January 2015. The other pages do not give a change date for their passport rules. Thailand cut its visa-free stay to 30 days on 15 September 2026, but the Royal Thai Embassy announcement of 8 September does not mention passport validity, so the six-month figure above comes from the FCDO and embassy entry pages. The EU's ETIAS system is not yet running, so it adds nothing to the Schengen rule today. See our ETIAS guide for the status.
Before you go
Look at the passport tonight. Write down the expiry date, the issue date and the number of blank pages, and set them against the rules for each country on your route. If the answer is close, renew now, because renewal times are set by your own government and you cannot shorten them later.

Häufige Fragen
Do all countries require six months of passport validity?
No. The Schengen area asks for three months after your planned departure, the UK and Japan only ask that the passport covers your stay, and Türkiye asks for 60 days beyond your permitted stay. Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Egypt, India and China ask for about six months.
My passport has five months left. Can I still go to Thailand?
The UK government's entry page for Thailand says the expiry date must be at least six months after the day you arrive, so five months does not meet the stated rule. Renew before you book, because the airline checks this at check-in.
What does the Schengen ten-year condition mean?
The passport must have been issued within the ten years before the day you enter, and it must also be valid for three months after the day you plan to leave. Both tests apply. Check the issue date on the data page, not only the expiry date.
Does the US six-month rule apply to British passports?
No. CBP lists the United Kingdom among the countries whose citizens only need a passport valid for their stay. Citizens of countries not on that list, which includes China and Vietnam, need six months beyond the stay.
Can an airline refuse to board me over passport validity?
Airlines check travel documents before boarding, and IATA says its Timatic tool automates those checks. The official pages do not say what a carrier must do when a passenger meets the published rule but its system disagrees, so ask the airline early and bring the official page.
Does Japan need extra months on the passport?
The UK government's Japan page says the passport must be valid for the length of your stay and that no additional period is required.
