Luís I Bridge

The Luís I Bridge crosses the Douro between Porto’s Ribeira district and Vila Nova de Gaia.

The Luís I Bridge crosses the Douro between Porto’s Ribeira district and Vila Nova de Gaia. This double-level iron bridge opened in 1886, with an arch designed by engineer Théophile Seyrig, who had worked with Gustave Eiffel. Walk across either level for views of the river, Porto’s rooftops and Gaia’s waterfront. The upper crossing gives a higher panorama; the lower brings you closer to the riverbanks. Both levels also connect you to the other side of the Douro, where Gaia’s port wine cellars are a short walk from the bridge.

A bridge between Porto and Gaia

Luís I Bridge

The Luís I Bridge links Porto’s Ribeira district with Vila Nova de Gaia across the Douro River. Its two levels suit the steep terrain on either side: the upper crossing runs high above the water, while the lower one meets the riverfront. Both have pedestrian access, so you can cross on foot and choose a different level for the return journey.

The iron bridge opened in 1886. Its design was by Théophile Seyrig, a Belgian engineer who had worked with Gustave Eiffel. The bridge’s broad arch and stacked decks give it a distinctive profile above the river. It is also part of the historic area of Porto classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Choosing a level to cross

The upper level gives you an elevated view across Porto, Gaia and the Douro. Look towards Ribeira for its tightly grouped rooftops and the old riverside district; across the water, Gaia’s wine cellars line the opposite bank. Boats moving along the river add another point of interest below. The upper deck is also used by the metro, so take care around trains while walking.

The lower level is closer to the water and the activity along its banks. It is shared with road traffic, and the footpaths are narrow. If heights are uncomfortable, this crossing may feel more manageable than the upper one. A useful route is to walk across one level and return by the other to compare the views.

When to go and what to expect

Sunset brings warm light over the river and rooftops, but the bridge can become crowded at this time. If you want more room to walk, choose another part of the day. Evening brings city lights reflected on the water, while daylight makes it easier to pick out the waterfront and boats.

Allow about 10 to 15 minutes for the crossing itself; stopping for photographs adds time. The approaches include steep streets and stairs, so the walk can take more effort than the bridge crossing. A cable car ride or a stroll along the riverbank can be another way to take in the area.

Continuing into Vila Nova de Gaia

On the Gaia side, the bridge gives direct access to the waterfront and the port wine cellars. You can continue on foot towards the cellars or follow the riverbank below for a closer view of the bridge. From either side, looking back across the Douro brings Porto’s hillside buildings into view.

The bridge works well as part of a walk linking Ribeira and Gaia, rather than as a separate stop with a fixed route. Choose your crossing level based on the views you want and how comfortable you are with heights, then use the other level to return.
