Canggu vs Seminyak vs Ubud: is Canggu the right Bali base?

Is Canggu the right Bali base? Who it suits (surfers, remote workers, longer stays), who should skip it, plus scooter, flooding and wet-season risks against Seminyak and Ubud.

Kurz gesagt

Pick Canggu if you want surf, cafes, coworking and a casual social scene, and you accept scooter traffic, patchy pavements and flooding in the wet season. Skip it if you want calm swimming, a quiet village or an easy airport run. Seminyak is the polished alternative and Ubud the culture and cool-evening one.

Is Canggu the right Bali base for you?

Canggu is the right base if you want surf, a cafe-and-coworking routine and a social crowd, and you are happy to depend on a scooter, a driver or ride-hailing for almost everything. It is the wrong base if you want a quiet village, calm swimming, walkable streets or temples at the end of the lane. That is the whole decision in two sentences, and the rest of this page tests it against the people who usually ask: surfers, remote workers, families and couples who are torn between Canggu, Seminyak and Ubud.

If you would rather start from Seminyak, read Seminyak vs Canggu vs Ubud, and if Ubud is your starting point, Ubud vs Canggu vs Seminyak frames it from the hills. The Canggu travel guide covers the area itself, and the Bali guide and the wider Indonesia guide place it on the map.

What Canggu actually is

Canggu is not one village but a string of pockets along a stretch of coast, joined by narrow roads through rice fields and building sites. Batu Bolong is the busiest, with cafes, bars, surf schools and shops close together. Berawa has newer villas, restaurants and beach clubs. Pererenan is a little calmer, and Echo Beach is the surf-and-sunset end of the strip. Each pocket is walkable inside itself and hard to walk between, so the first decision is not Canggu or not, but which pocket. The where to stay in Canggu guide compares them.

The mood is young, casual and active. Days tend to run on a loop of surf or gym, a long breakfast, work or a pool, and a sunset drink. The scene suits people who like routine and meeting others, and it wears thin quickly for anyone who wanted Bali to feel remote.

Who should choose Canggu, and who should not

Surfers. Canggu is a beginner-friendly place to learn because lessons and board rentals are easy to book and the breaks vary. The caution is that these are open-coast surf beaches, and swimming off them is a different skill from standing on a board. Ask the surf school or your hotel about the day's conditions, avoid swimming alone, and treat any beach without flags or lifeguards as one where you stay in your depth.

Remote workers and long-stayers. Canggu has the densest cluster of cafes, coworking spaces and monthly rentals of the three bases, which is its real advantage. Plan for outages: the UK government's advice for Indonesia notes that Bali can suffer severe localized flooding that causes major traffic congestion and power outages, so keep a second data source, such as an eSIM plus a hotspot, and do not schedule a critical call on a stormy afternoon. The eSIM guides compare options.

Couples. Canggu works if you want a lively, casual atmosphere and a villa with a pool. It works less well for a polished, dressed-up trip, where Seminyak fits better, or for a culture-and-quiet trip, where Ubud wins.

Families. Canggu suits families with older children who like beaches and pools, because villas with private pools are common. It is harder with small children: pavements are patchy, roads are busy and nothing is a safe walk away. If you go, choose a pocket where the restaurants and the beach are close to your gate, ask about pool fencing and supervision, and plan on a driver.

Do not choose Canggu if you dislike scooters and traffic, if you want to swim in calm water every day, if you want an easy airport run on the first and last night, or if you want to wake up in the countryside. Sanur is the usual alternative if gentler water matters most; see the Sanur guide.

Scooters, traffic and safety

Scooters are the default way to move around Canggu, which is also its biggest risk. UK government advice for Indonesia says traffic discipline is very poor, that there has been a large increase in moped and motorbike accidents, some fatal, in Bali, and that you should wear a helmet in good condition. It adds that foreign nationals involved in even minor traffic violations or accidents may be vulnerable to extortion. On licences, it says you cannot drive in Indonesia on a UK licence alone but can use an International Driving Permit issued by the UK, and that you should check your travel insurance covers the vehicle. Other nationalities should check their own government's rules.

If you do not have the right licence, cover and experience, do not rent a scooter. The sensible alternatives are a private driver for the day, ride-hailing where pickup is allowed, and choosing a pocket where you can walk to meals. The advice recommends employing a private driver or hiring a car with a driver. The airport to Canggu and getting around guide covers transfers, scooter rental and traffic patterns in detail.

Nighttime adds its own rules. The same advice says reported cases of sexual assault are high in Bali and Lombok, so be alert at night and avoid poorly lit areas. It reports drink spiking linked to sexual assault in Bali, advising you to watch your drinks being prepared and not to accept drinks from strangers. For taxis, it says to use registered companies such as Bluebird, Silverbird or Express and to check the driver's identity, and when using a ride app to confirm that the driver matches the app. It also warns of bag-snatching in Bali, so conceal your bag and carry only what you need.

Rain, flooding and the wet season

The UK advice says the rainy season in Indonesia usually runs from October to March, that flash floods can occur across the country, and that Bali can suffer severe localized flooding with traffic congestion and power outages. For Canggu, where lanes are narrow and low, that means a wet-season trip needs slack. Leave buffer time before flights, ask your host about drainage and past flooding on the lane before you book a villa, and monitor the national weather agency, BMKG, which has an English version. In the wet season, a day that would have been a surf-and-cafe loop can become a day indoors, so Canggu is a weaker choice for a short trip in those months than Ubud, which has more indoor culture, or Seminyak, which has more spas and malls.

What Canggu is not

It is not a quiet rice-field village any more. Construction continues, and some lanes carry as much traffic as a town. It is not walkable end to end. It is not a swimming resort. It is not close to the airport, so the first and last nights can be long transfers. And it is not a cultural base: temples, craft villages and ceremonies are reachable by car, but they are a day out, not your doorstep. If those things matter, build them in rather than hoping to find them.

Canggu, Seminyak and Ubud side by side

The table uses qualitative cells only, because transfer times depend heavily on the hour and the day.

Building a trip around Canggu

If you are staying a week or more, treat Canggu as the main base and add one contrast stop. Two or three nights in Ubud at the start or end gives you temples and cooler evenings. A night near the airport on the way out removes the stress of a long final transfer. Skip a third base unless you have ten days or more, because every move costs most of a day with luggage and traffic.

If you are staying under five nights, choose a single pocket and use day trips instead of moving. If you are staying a month or longer, rent a place by the month rather than by the night, ask about internet, backup power and flooding in the lane, and keep a short list of backup cafes for outage days. The Bali tourist levy and e-VoA page covers the arrival steps; UK advice says the Bali levy is 150,000 Indonesian rupiah, that a 30-day visa on arrival costs 500,000 rupiah, and that you should complete the All Indonesia arrival form within 72 hours before you arrive. If you rent a private villa or room instead of a hotel, the same advice says you must register your presence with the local police and could be fined 5 million rupiah if you do not; hotels register you automatically, so ask your host who handles it.

Mistakes to avoid

Do not rent a scooter because everyone else does; decide on licence, cover and experience first. Do not book a long stay unseen without asking about internet, backup power and flooding. Do not plan a day trip across Bali for the same afternoon as a flight. Do not drink tap water; the advice says tap water is not safe to drink anywhere in Indonesia. Do not change money at an unmarked stall; it says to use licensed exchanges identified by a Bank of Indonesia logo and a QR code. Do not feed or tease monkeys or street dogs, because rabies exists and any bite or scratch needs immediate medical attention.

Whichever base you pick, get an eSIM before you land, sort travel insurance that covers the activities you plan, and read getting around if you are combining Bali with other islands.

Häufige Fragen

Is Canggu better than Ubud?

They are different trips. Canggu is a beach-and-cafe base with surf and casual nightlife; Ubud is inland, with rice terraces, temples and a quieter evening. Choose Canggu for the coast and a social routine, and Ubud for culture and calm.

Is Canggu or Seminyak better for first-timers?

Seminyak for most first-timers, because it is closer to the airport, more polished and easier to do without a scooter. Canggu suits people who want surf, cafes and a younger scene and are comfortable with busy, narrow roads.

Is Canggu safe to stay in?

Most trouble comes from traffic and nights out. UK government advice says moped accidents in Bali have risen sharply, that drink spiking and sexual assault are reported, and that bag-snatching is common. Use a driver or registered taxis, watch your drinks and carry only what you need.

Does Canggu flood in the rainy season?

It can. UK government advice says the rainy season usually runs from October to March and that Bali can suffer severe localized flooding with traffic congestion and power outages. Ask your host about the lane, keep a backup data source and leave buffer before flights.

Can you stay in Canggu and visit Ubud?

Yes, as a long day trip with a driver, but traffic makes the round trip tiring. If Ubud is a priority, spend at least two nights there so you can see the terraces and temples early and quietly.

Is Canggu good for remote work?

It has the most cafes, coworking spaces and monthly rentals of the three bases, which is its main advantage. Check internet and backup power before you commit to a long stay, and keep a second data connection for outage days.

  1. 2026-10-02: rewritten with Canggu as the baseline (the Seminyak page takes Seminyak as baseline); checked UK government travel advice for Indonesia (arrival form, visa on arrival, Bali levy, private accommodation registration, driving and licences, flooding and rainy season, crime, taxis, tap water, rabies). Transfer times were not verifiable and were removed.
