Choose Seminyak for a first trip with beach clubs, restaurants and easy airport access. Choose Canggu for surf, cafes and a younger crowd, and accept scooter traffic. Choose Ubud for temples, terraces and cooler nights, with no beach. If you have a week or more, split it: Ubud first, the coast last.
Bali has three bases that most first-time visitors choose between, and the choice shapes your whole trip. Seminyak is the polished beach strip with restaurants and beach clubs, Canggu is the surf-and-cafe coast a little further north, and Ubud is the inland culture town among rice terraces. Road trips between them take a good part of a morning or afternoon, and each gives a very different holiday.
For the wider trip, see the Indonesia guide.
The quick answer
Pick Seminyak if you want an easy, comfortable beach holiday on the southern side of the island, with dinners on foot and spas and shops nearby. Pick Canggu if surf, coworking cafes and a younger crowd matter more than polish, and you accept scooter traffic and rougher streets. Pick Ubud if you want temples, craft villages, yoga, jungle views and cooler evenings, and you can live without a beach.
If you have five nights or fewer, pick one and add day trips. With a week or more, split: Ubud first, when you are fresh for temples and early mornings, and the coast last, when you want the pool and sunsets. Do not try all three on a short trip, because each move costs half a day.
Who should choose Seminyak, and who should not
Seminyak is the right base for first-timers who want a smooth start, couples looking for a restaurant-led holiday, groups with mixed interests who need something for everyone, and travelers who want to arrive, put the bags down and not plan much. Its strength is concentration: shops, spas, beach clubs and a deep restaurant scene sit within a short ride of each other.
It is the wrong base for travelers who want cheap and basic, who want to be among rice fields, or who want a village atmosphere. It is also a weak base for anyone who hates traffic, because short rides take longer than they look on a map. And it is not the best choice if surf is the reason you came, because Canggu's lineup of surf-focused cafes, schools and rentals is the stronger fit.
Seminyak: easy beach, restaurants and spas
Seminyak is the most comfortable of the three. Hotels and villas are plentiful, the restaurant scene is deep, and the airport is on the same side of the island, so a first-night transfer is relatively short. The lanes around Jalan Kayu Aya are walkable for dinner and shops, the beach faces west for sunset, and beach clubs and spas are a short ride apart. It is the easiest base for couples, first-timers and anyone who wants to spend a few days without planning much.
The costs are traffic and a polished, tourist-first feel. Pavements are patchy, evening roads clog, and short rides take longer than you expect. The beach is wide but the sea is not a hotel pool: swim where there are flags and lifeguards, ask your hotel about the day's conditions, and treat a strong current as a reason to stay on the sand. Seminyak does not feel like a village, and it is not the place for temples or rice fields. The where to stay in Seminyak guide compares four pockets within it, from Kayu Aya to Umalas.
Canggu: surf, cafes and a younger scene
Canggu is a coastal strip of rice-field lanes, surf breaks, cafes, coworking spaces and beach bars. It draws surfers, remote workers and travelers who want a casual, social atmosphere. Food leans toward brunch menus, smoothie bowls and relaxed dinners, and the nightlife is informal rather than formal. Many people stay a week or more, because the daily routine of surf, cafe and sunset becomes the holiday.
The trade-offs are scooters and roughness. Roads are narrow and busy, scooter traffic is dense, and construction has changed what was once a quiet rice-field area. Walkability is limited, so you rely on scooters, taxis or ride-hailing. Beaches are mostly surf beaches with dark sand and strong currents, and many are not suited to casual swimming. If you are not an experienced rider, a driver or ride-hailing is a safer way to move around. See the Canggu guide for the details, and the airport to Canggu and getting around page for transfers.
Ubud: culture, terraces and cooler nights
Ubud sits inland, in the hills, and it is the most traditional of the three. The town has temples, dance performances, galleries, craft villages, yoga studios and some of Bali's best-known rice terraces nearby. Evenings are cooler than on the coast, and mornings are quiet. It suits travelers who want culture, nature and a slower pace more than a beach.
There is no beach, so a pure beach holiday does not work here. The center is busy with scooters and tour vans, and the main street can be slow at peak hours. Many of the best stays sit just outside the center, in rice fields or on ridges, and need a short ride. Ubud works well as a two- or three-night stop at the start of a trip. The Ubud guide has more on temples and day trips, and Ubud in 3 days gives a plan.

Safety, scams and sensible habits by base
The base you choose changes which risks matter. The UK government's travel advice for Indonesia reports a large increase in moped and motorbike accidents in Bali, says traffic discipline is very poor, and recommends employing a private driver or hiring a car with a driver. That matters most in Canggu and Ubud, where scooters are the default, and least in a Seminyak pocket where you walk to dinner.
The same advice says there has been a rise in scams at tattoo parlours, nail salons and spas in Bali, and tells travelers to choose a provider carefully and agree fees in advance. Seminyak has the densest spa and salon scene, so agree the price before the treatment starts. It also reports drink spiking linked to sexual assault in Bali, advising you to watch your drinks being prepared and not to accept drinks from strangers, which applies at beach clubs and bars in all three areas. For taxis, it says to use registered companies such as Bluebird, Silverbird or Express and check the driver's identity, and when using a mobile app to confirm the driver matches the app.
In Ubud, remember that the advice mentions monkeys around temples and tourist areas and many street dogs in Bali; rabies exists in wild and domestic animals, and any bite or scratch needs immediate medical attention. Tap water is not safe to drink anywhere in Indonesia, so use bottled or filtered water.
Splitting your stay
For a week, a common pattern is three nights in Ubud, then four on the coast. This lets you do temples and terraces while your energy is high and finish with pool days and sunsets. Moving between them is a half-day affair, and a private driver is the easiest way to do it with luggage. For ten days, add Sanur or Padangbai for boats to the islands; see the Sanur guide.
If you are splitting, put your most weather-dependent activity on the day with the best forecast. Showers and humid afternoons are more likely in the wetter months, and the coast can have strong swells at any time, so check conditions before you swim or surf. A rainy day is a strong argument for Ubud's galleries, cafes and spas rather than a beach club.
Sort the entry steps before you fly: the Bali e-VOA, levy and arrival form guide explains what you need. A local data plan helps with rides and maps in all three bases, so compare options in the connectivity guides.

Rainy-day and backup plans
Seminyak's backup is easy: spas, shopping, cafes and long lunches fill a wet afternoon, and a driver can take you to a covered attraction. Canggu's backup is thinner for non-surfers, because the scene relies on outdoor spaces; cafes and coworking spots help, but a rainy week there can feel long. Ubud has the best wet-day depth, with galleries, performances, cooking classes and spas.
If rain is likely, bias your split toward Ubud earlier in the trip, and keep your coast nights for the end when a missed beach day matters less. Avoid booking a non-refundable activity for a single day, and leave a buffer before your flight home.
Mistakes to avoid
Do not book Canggu expecting a polished resort strip, or Seminyak expecting a village. Do not underestimate transfer time between bases: a driver plus luggage plus traffic eats the middle of the day. Do not rent a scooter without the right licence and cover; the UK advice says you cannot drive in Indonesia on a UK licence alone, that you can use a UK-issued international driving permit, and that you should check that your insurance covers the vehicle. Other nationalities should check their own government's rules.
Do not leave the airport transfer to chance on the first night. And do not try to see all three bases in four days, because you will spend more time in the car than on the beach, in a cafe or at a temple.
If you choose Seminyak, Seminyak in 3 days gives a timed plan with a driver day to Ubud or Uluwatu. If you choose Ubud or Canggu, start with their own guides and then use the same entry and insurance steps. Whichever base you pick, pre-book your airport transfer for the first night, since the road from the airport is slow at peak hours and ride-hailing pickup rules at airports and hotels vary.
Häufige Fragen
Is Seminyak or Canggu better for a first trip to Bali?
Seminyak, for most first-timers. It has more hotels, easier airport access, restaurants on foot and polished beach clubs. Canggu suits surfers and cafe-hoppers who are comfortable with rougher streets and heavy scooter traffic.
Should I stay in Ubud or Seminyak?
Stay in Ubud for temples, rice terraces, yoga and cooler evenings, and in Seminyak for the beach and nightlife. They are a half-day move apart, so a split stay of two or three nights each works well.
How long does it take to get from Seminyak to Canggu?
A short road trip, but the stretch can crawl at sunset and on weekends. It is close enough for a dinner or a surf lesson, but not worth a daily commute. Ask your driver for a current estimate.
Which Bali base is the cheapest?
Canggu and Ubud often offer more budget guesthouses and cafes than Seminyak's boutique strip. Prices vary by season and by whether you choose a hotel or a villa, so compare current offers for your dates.
Can you do all three in one trip?
Yes with at least a week. Many travelers spend a few nights in Ubud, then move to the coast for the rest. Moving between bases costs a half day each time, so avoid more than two or three on a short trip.
Which Bali base is safest for a first-time visitor?
Seminyak, where you can walk to dinner and avoid scooters. UK government advice reports many moped accidents in Bali and suggests a private driver. Agree spa prices in advance and watch your drinks.
