Sajjan Garh Biological Park sits at the foot of the hill below the Monsoon Palace, about 4 km from central Udaipur. The park covers 36 hectares and houses about 60 animals of 21 species, including tigers, lions, leopards, sloth bears, hyenas, deer and crocodiles. The enclosures are large and planted to resemble natural habitats, so animals can take time to find. Cart drivers who stop at each enclosure help you spot them. The park suits families, and the palace above is worth a visit at sunset.

Where the park sits

The park lies at the foot of Bansdara hill, close to the Sajjangarh Wildlife Sanctuary. It is about 4 km from central Udaipur and about 6 km from the railway station and the central bus stand. The address is on Fateh Sagar Road, in the Malla Talai area.

Above it stands the Monsoon Palace, also called Sajjangarh Palace. Maharana Sajjan Singh built it in the 19th century as a royal residence and a place to watch the monsoon clouds gather over the hills. The two sites are close, so you can combine them in one trip.

An older zoo once operated at Gulab Bagh. Its animals were moved to the new park in 2015, when Sajjangarh Biological Park opened beneath the palace. The park covers 36 hectares, and its development cost 21.70 crore rupees.

The park's stated aim is to make people aware of the flora and fauna of the Mewar region.

The animals and the enclosures

The park houses about 60 animals of 21 species, along with birds and reptiles. The residents include tigers, lions, leopards, sloth bears, Himalayan black bears, hyenas, deer, blackbucks, ostriches, alligators, marsh crocodiles, porcupines and turtles.

The enclosures are wide and planted to resemble natural habitats. That suits the animals, but it means you may need time to find them, since they often rest out of sight. Some drivers walk ahead to find a resting bear or lion before they stop the cart at the viewing point.

Getting around and facilities

The park is large, and walking the full route takes effort. Battery-operated carts and a golf cart are available, and bicycles can be rented. A cart for two to four people cost about 708 rupees on one visit, so check the current rate at the gate. Guided tours are offered.

Inside you will find a cafe and a canteen, drinking water, washrooms, rest areas and guided boards. A children's playground and a kids zone sit within the grounds, and photo booths are available. The entrance, the restrooms and the parking lot are wheelchair accessible.

Planning the day

Arrive when the gates open to see the animals before the heat builds. Set aside two to three hours for the park alone.

If you plan to watch the sunset, the palace above is the place for it. The palace draws crowds and photographers in the hour before sunset, so plan to reach it early and keep the park for the morning.
