Lake Pichola sits at the centre of Udaipur, with palaces, ghats and hills around its banks. A boat ride brings you close to views of the City Palace, Jag Mandir and Lake Palace, with the Aravalli hills beyond. You can also pause by the water for sunset or visit nearby cafes. The lake dates to 1362; Maharana Udai Singh later enlarged it and founded Udaipur on its shore. For cooler, more settled weather, plan your visit between October and March.
A lake at the heart of Udaipur

Lake Pichola is an artificial freshwater lake in central Udaipur. It was created in 1362 by Pichhu Banjara, a grain transporter, during the reign of Maharana Lakha. The lake took its name from the nearby village of Picholi.
Maharana Udai Singh later enlarged the lake and established Udaipur on its banks. The water body and the city grew together: palaces, temples, havelis and bathing ghats line the shore, while palaces stand on islands in the lake. The City Palace complex runs along its eastern side.
Palaces and hills from the water

A boat ride gives you a view of Udaipur’s landmarks from a different angle. Look towards the City Palace on the shore, then out to Jag Mandir and the Lake Palace on their islands. The Aravalli hills form the backdrop. Boats also pass the ghats and the buildings along the banks.
Jag Mandir is a stop on some boat rides, giving you time to explore the island palace. The Lake Palace, also known as Jag Niwas, is a hotel, and its interiors are not open to non-guests. You can admire it from the water instead.
Choosing when to go
Morning and evening rides bring views of the city as the light changes. Around sunset, the palaces and hills reflect across the water; mornings can be quieter. If you visit in July, the monsoon can bring fresh greenery around the hills and a cool, cloudy atmosphere. Rain can affect boat availability, so carry an umbrella or raincoat.
October to March is the recommended season for more settled weather. Boat fares in the supplied information range from ₹400 to ₹1,000 per person, depending on timing. Leave the car farther away and approach the lake by auto rather than trying to drive close to the waterfront.
