Nehru Park is a public park on Cotton University Road in Pan Bazaar, central Guwahati, across the street from Cotton University and about 1 km from the railway station. The ground was once known as Church Field. Today it has shaded walking paths, flower beds, a rock garden, fountains, an open-air theatre and 45 sculptures of Assamese dance forms. A children's area with a toy train makes it an easy family stop. Mornings and late afternoons are the calmest times to walk the paths.

From Church Field to public park

Nehru Park is one of the oldest public green spaces in Guwahati. It covers 18 bighas in the city's historic academic quarter, where a colonial-era church and its adjoining cemetery once stood. For that reason the ground was first known as Church Field.

The park is named after Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister. In 2020 the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority carried out a major renovation. It added a waterbody around the Ashoka Stambha and built a multi-utility building. It also restored several of the park's sculptures.

The sculptures are the park's best-known feature. There are 45 concrete figures, each showing a dance form of Assam. Among them are Bihu, Ojapali, Bor Taal, Deodhani and Jhumur. The restored statue of Swahid Kushal Konwar stands among them.

Elsewhere the park is laid out for walking. Pruned trees and flower beds line the paths, and a rock garden follows Japanese garden design. Fountains and the waterbody around the Ashoka Stambha add the sound of water. The trees draw birds, and benches in the shade make it easy to stop and watch them.

The jogging track runs through the grounds, and the paths are kept clean.

Theatre, play areas and sports

An open-air amphitheatre in the park gives local artists a place to perform. Check on site whether anything is scheduled during your visit.

Children have a large play area with swings, slides and a miniature train. The playground is limited to children under 12, so older children may prefer the paths and lawns. There are also basketball, volleyball and tennis courts and a skateboarding area. Picnic tables are provided, and many families bring food and spend the afternoon under the trees.
